Tech Week: Gran Turismo 5 review and iOS 4.2 launched

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 10:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
It is here, finally here. Yes, really. After five years of waiting and countless delays and postponements, Gran Turismo 5 has gone on sale and if getting to the grid was hard work for GT5 completing the first lap has been just as difficult. With a patch released ahead of the launch paving the way for trouble online gamers ground to a halt as single player mode was hit by download feed issues. Whilst Sony has sad a second patch is to be released this weekend as a fix, it has failed to acknowledge the issues with Signature Edition copies failing to allow the promised exclusive car downloads. Consider the GT5 bubble popped then.

Apple iOS 4.2 was finally launched this week after much speculation as to when it would arrive. Monday was rumoured to be the day of arrival and this came to pass as iPads were given multitasking capabilities and folder organisation. Despite this recent release, speculation is already running rife about Apple iOS 4.3 landing this December. Likely? Perhaps not but fingers crossed.

Away from Gran Turismo 5 gaming has taken the headline repeatedly this week. Whilst a PSP Phone arrival date has leaked, December 9th in case you wondered. Elsewhere PlayStation touting Call of Duty: Black Ops gamers have hit out at Activision petitioning for a full refund for what they consider an 'inferior' title to that offered to the Xbox contingent. Further irking PS3 owners is the news that Microsoft is to offer free Xbox LIVE Gold access this weekend. What are you waiting for Xbox owners get online now.

Finally, calling all wannabe iPad owners, this week has been riddled with offers for the Apple tablet. Whilst Apple has announced its own UK bound black Friday offers, Orange and T-Mobile declared they will subsidise iPads. This news was shortly followed by a similar deal with Three Mobile and the revelation that Apple has a Twitter page that intends to give 100 iPads away. Lovely.

In an attempt to curb the market share held by rivals Flip, Sony has updated its micro-pocket camcorder to sport a tasty 3-inch touchscreen. Our review of the cleverly named Sony Bloggie Touch looks at the device's new touchscreen controls and high-end image quality with a rather impressive four-star result.

Acer revealed a range of new tablet devices this week at a conference in New York, the strangest looking among the bunch, the Acer Iconia made a trip via T3 Towers for a hands-on with the 10.1-inch dual-screen tablet device. Running Windows 7 Home Premium, the Iconia allows users to transform either screen into a full QWERTY touchscreen keyboard.

Apple iPad 2 to have camera and retina display?

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 04:26 AM PST

Apple iPad 2 to drop Q1 2011 with new screen?

More rumours today on what is already the most rumoured-about product on the planet, Apple's follow up to T3 Gadget of the Year winner, the iPad. According to China's Economic Daily News (the same Economic Daily News that brought us rumours on the original iPad), iPad 2.0 will pack dual cameras (one front, one back), a retina display screen and a USB port.

The paper also hinted at a new touch display rolling out on iPad 2, but was sketchy about what exactly this might be. Stylus support, perhaps? Colour us intrigued. The paper rounded out its rumour-fest with news that iPad 2 will reportedly pack a 3-axis gyroscope and a 7" display - putting it in even closer competition with the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the BlackBerry PlayBook.

So, how long until we can expect to get our hands on one? Economic Daily News puts the release at some time in Q1 2011, smack bang when BlackBerry are reportedly planning to release their PlayBook tablet. More details when we have them.

Pirate Bay verdict: 22 months prison time and £4.1m fine

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 03:55 AM PST

Trouble on the high seas for the "world's most resilient torrent site"

The four founders of The Pirate Bay, the world's largest Bittorrent site, have lost their appeal against having the site closed down and serving time. While the sentences have all been reduced, the fines have been bumped up to a not-inconsiderable 46 million kronor (about £4.1 million).

In its heyday, The Pirate Bay had over 25 million unique users, but its creators shirked responsibility by arguing that none of the illegal content users downloaded was actually hosted on the site, but rather was distributed by its users.

Pirate Bay founders Fredrik Neij will serve 10 months, Peter Sunde eight months and Carl Lundstrom four months. The fourth crusty old seadog - Gottfrid Svartholm Warg - was not in court due to illness, and will have his sentence meted out when fit to stand trial.

As of this morning, The Pirate Bay appears alive and well, with no word on when the site will disappear for good.

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

Must.Eat.Birds for Android
What is it with birds and apps these days? It’s almost as if there is a hugely popular game out there and other app manufacturers are trying to grab a bit of the limelight. Thankfully Must.Eat.Birds is not an Angry Birds rip-off, but a decent game in its own right. You control a Nomster – which is essentially a hungry monster.

It's magic and it's a guidebook. It's Magic Guidebook
Is this the best location-based search service for Windows Mobile yet? Well, granted, there isn't that much competition, but Magic Guidebook is definitely worth a look. Download it today.

Apple bans Android magazine from App Store

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 02:18 AM PST

Jobs and co. tighten their grip further on the Apple App Store.

We reported back in February the news that Apple was chucking apps from its App Store with the word 'Android' in the title, but now it appears Apple have taken that policy one step further, banning Android-centric magazine app Android Magasinet from its App Store altogether. The offense? Dedicating the app exclusively to Google's Android OS and handsets, apparently.

The app's creator, Danish publisher Mediaprovider, was reportedly contacted by an Apple representative who explained, "It's just about Android... We can't have that in our App Store."

Brian Dixen, managing director of the company which produced the app, responded that, "it's funny really, because I don't think we would sell many magazines on Android through the Apple App Store, but the question is where this is going."

Apple have a well-trodden history of purging that which is unclean from the App Store, and Android-centric apps now look set to join WiFi finding apps and the plethora of apps deemed too sexy for Apple users' sensibilities.
