Tech Week: Call of Duty: Black Ops and Kinect released

Posted: 13 Nov 2010 10:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
In a week of big releases, one has stood out head and shoulders above the rest. Call of Duty: Black Ops released on Tuesday quickly secured opening day sales records in the UK, sales records in the US and more than 1 million online users by 1am of launch day. All this hype followed the revelation that Asda would offer the game for £4.97 and Blockbuster just 99p. All was not smooth for the CoD arrival, however, as many gamers have reported glitches in their Black Ops copies.

Following its arrival stateside last week, Microsoft Kinect launched in the UK this week. The UK arrival of Kinect came after the controller-less gaming gadget had its on-board cameras hacked in the US sparking a flurry of privacy concerns. Despite this one US retailer was willing to boldly declare that the Microsoft add-on will outsell Move, the PlayStation motion offering this festive period. Elsewhere in the gaming world, the long awaited and repeatedly delayed Gran Turismo 5 has been given an official launch date of November 24th.

With the tablet wars set to hot up in the new year with a brace of new competitors to the market leading Apple iPad, RIM took the time this week to release some key, and exciting, information about its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. As well as getting info on a possible February 2011 arrival, RIM’s CEO declared that the PlayBook will land in the US for under $500. Interested yet?

Samsung officially unveiled the Samsung Continuum Android 2.1 powered handset this week with leaks coming later on of other new Sammy devices, an Android 2.3 running number and the Samsung Nexus S. Elsewhere in the mobile world in the past seven days, creators of the Flash enabling iPhone app SkyFire have netted a cool $1 million and the Apple iPhone is set to add 3D capabilities in the near future.

Angry Birds on Xbox Live, PSN and WiiWare

Posted: 13 Nov 2010 07:00 AM PST

Coming soon to a television near you: Angry Birds!

Angry Birds is now slated to break out of your mobile phones and on to the television screens.

No, not a movie (that we know of!) but more gaming platforms. Developer Rovio announced at the Social Gaming Summit that we will soon see the Angry Birds on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and WiiWare.

The price and release date haven't been announced yet.

The first Social Gaming Summit was attended by Rovio's Peter Vesterbacka and according to Pocket Gamer, he has hinted that there might just be a version of the game that will lend a voice to the pigs' side of the story.

He is also reported to have commented on how rather than sell "100 crappy farm animals", they're creating a Mighty Eagle. Farmville, anyone?

The smash hit game is currently available on iOS, Android and Nokia phones. Its success story has even lent to the creation of Angry Birds plush toys. There's even an Angry Birds Hallowe'en game available for iPhones and iPod Touches.

Are you planning to get Angry Birds when they come onto these gaming platforms? Pop over to T3's Twitter and Facebook and tell us what your thoughts are.

Tetris therapy to reduce flashbacks and stress

Posted: 13 Nov 2010 03:50 AM PST

After being in circulation for over 25 years, Tetris is healing people

Tetris isn't just another game - it has a positive effect on people suffering from stress.

Researchers from Oxford University have found that the block game is able to psychologically heal people suffering from trauma or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

A group of people, with no prior mental problems, were tested, and were shown a video containing stressful images. Then, the subjects were split into three groups, one playing Tetris, one playing a Pub Quiz game and the last were told to sit quietly.

After 10 minutes, experts found that the participants playing Tetris reported fewest number of flashbacks in comparison with the other two groups. No other game seemed to have the same effect.

The test was repeated with the same results.

The authors of the report said: "We account for this based on current models of memory consolidation indicating that certain types of memory may be malleable for up to six hours."

It suggests that visual-spatial activities like Tetris can be developed as a kind of "cognitive vaccine" as an alternative to current treatment for stress disorders.

Not bad for a game that's over 25 years old.

Will you be playing Tetris is an attempt to de-stress yourself? Tell us what you think on T3's Twitter and Facebook pages and tune in for your regular dose of tech news.

App Week: Skyfire brings Flash to iPhone, FIFA on sale

Posted: 13 Nov 2010 03:00 AM PST

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

Skyfire is no Flash in the pan
The Flash video enabling Skyfire app for iPhone is proving a massive hit among iPhone owners who've previously been denied the essential Abobe plug in. Just a week after hitting the App Store it has already generated more than $1m for developers. A UK launch is pending Apple's approval.

EA Mobile games going for 59p
There's some pretty triumphant versions of EA's console games up for grabs on the iPhone and now Tiger, FIFA and Madden among others are on sale for just 59p. That's 80 per cent off the normal price. A nice weekend bargain indeed.

STD detector infecting your iPhone
iPhone owners who don't practice safe sex could avoid those embarrassing visits to the doctors by piddling on their prized smartphone. Read on to find out how STDs could be diagnosed by an iPhone app in years to come.

Windows Phone 7 owners get Google option
Fair play to Microsoft. The software giant has given new WP7 handset owners the chance to switch it up from Bing Search by launching a Google app for its new OS. It can even be pinned to the homescreen. How very sporting.

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

Android game to burst the App Store's bubble?
It's not too often we're heralding Android apps on the T3 App Chart, but this fun strategy game is certainly worth a shout out. The object of the game is pretty simple. Burst as many bubbles as you can in the least amount of turns possible. And it's free too. Check out Bubble Burst 2 for Android.

Bada finds the back of the net
The Goal.com app for Samsung Bada phones like the Samsung Wave is one of the best for the platform so far, bringing users up to date with all the latest footy news and transfer rumours. Another free app that's definitely worth a gander.

It's Risk, but without the lawsuit
An app incarnation of the ultimate strategy board game is a most welcome addition to the Windows Mobile App Marketplace. The tactfully-named Risky Wars isn't cheap at £5.19, but for a spot of nostalgia it's pretty tempting.

More than 230,000 following the Queen on Facebook

Posted: 13 Nov 2010 02:00 AM PST

It's been less than a week since the British Monarchy Facebook page went live, yet over 230,000 Facebook-ers already "like" the page.

However, not only genuine fans but anti-royalists also joined the page to pass rude or abusive comments on various discussion boards, which have been moderated.

The Queen and the British Monarchy are no strangers to social media and technology. Over the course of time, they have adopted social media to communicate directly with the people.

They already have official Twitter and Flickr accounts, as well as a YouTube channel. Their official Twitter page has over 75,000 followers, with their YouTube channel having over 33,000 subscribers and over 8 million upload views.

Now they've adopted Facebook and from the looks of it, have a hefty fan following already.

Have you "liked" The British Monarchy yet? What do you think about their social media strategy? T3 has just under 11,000 fans on Facebook. Go on then, follow us on Twitter and Facebook if you haven't already!
