CoD: Black Ops just will not go away. Today it has been making headline once again for both good and bad reasons. On the plus side, Black Ops has broken all opening day sales records eclipsing its predecessor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 with sales topping $360 million in just 24 hours. On the flip side the latest Call of Duty title has offended the Cuban government with the glorification of assassination attempts on former leader Fidel Castro.
Flash for iPhone was always going to be a great money-spinner for whoever mastered it first and that honour (and the cash rewards) has gone to the developers of the SkyFire app which raked in over $1 million in its first weekend. Elsewhere in the app market EA has announced it is to offer 80 per cent off all of it iPod and iPhone games. What are you waiting for?
New Sony products have emerged today as the Sony Bloggie Touch launches in the UK following its official unveiling at IFA two months again and with a rather tasty £219 price tag. Another new Sony arrival today was the Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 Anzu which has appeared running Google's upcoming Android 2.3 operating system. Tasty. Call of Duty: Black Ops release breaks opening day records Posted: 11 Nov 2010 08:12 AM PST Call of Duty franchise breaks own sales records Following its one second past midnight launch on Tuesday, Call of Duty: Black Ops has broken all opening day entertainment sales records, publisher Activision has claimed.
After just 24 hours of sales in the US and UK alone, Black Ops, the latest edition to the phenomenally successful Call of Duty franchise “has become the biggest entertainment launch ever” with the Treyarch shooter taking an estimated $360 million (£223m), $50 million more than last year’s Call of Duty offering, Modern Warfare 2.
"The game's success underscores the pop culture appeal of the brand. Call of Duty: Black Ops is the finest game that Treyarch has ever made and raises the bar for online gameplay by delivering the deepest and most intense Call of Duty experience yet."
Activision is claiming that it shifted roughly 5.6 million copies of Black Ops on the game’s opening day compared to Modern Warfare 2’s opening day sales of 4.7 million units. These impressive figures are not the end for the Black Ops release, however, with Kotick adding: "The Call of Duty franchise has over 25 million players around the world that are engaged in billions of hours of online gameplay, and we are committed to supporting them with new content and features on a more frequent and regular basis."

Call of Duty: Black Ops release angers Cuban government Posted: 11 Nov 2010 06:43 AM PST Call of Duty: Black Ops causes controversy with Castro killing Call of Duty: Black Ops has sparked controversy in Cuba after one of the game’s opening missions sees gamers ‘encouraged’ to assassinate former Cuban president Fidel Castro.
The current Cuban government has struck out at the game via the cubadebate website proclaiming: “What the United States government did not achieve in more than 50 years, it now tries to do virtually,” before adding the game glorified legitimate US attempts to kill the Cuban head for 49 years.
"This new video game is doubly perverse. On the one hand, it glorifies the illegal assassination attempts the United States government planned against the Cuban leader … and on the other, it stimulates sociopathic attitudes in North American children and adolescents." read the angered article on cubadebate.
This not the first time video game content has sparked controversy. Just months ago, the latest Medal of Honor release sparked an ethical and moral debate when it was revealed gamers could play as Taliban insurgents tasked with killing US soldiers.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 Anzu: Android 2.3 phone incoming Posted: 11 Nov 2010 03:02 AM PST 2011 release mooted for latest in Xperia line. Sony Ericsson’s Android phones are no doubt great to look at. But their failure to play nice with the very latest versions of Google’s killer OS has caused problems. However, it seems things are all set to change with the arrival of the Anzu, also known as the Xperia X12.
This spanking new Android handset has been leaked on The Unofficial Xperia X10 blog, with pics showing a huge, but superslim device with a 4.3-inch panel. While the one snapped is running Android 2.1, word to the wise is that the X12 will be loaded up with Android 2.3 Gingerbread when it hits shelves early next year.
On top of that monster screen, there’s said to be HDMI out and 1080 HD video recording, putting this right up there with the Samsung Galaxy S. The X12 is expected to be announced alongside the much-hyped PSP phone in December, ahead of their New Year on sale dates.
Elsewhere the X10 Mini and Mini Pro are being lined up for a refresh, with Android 2.3 on board. The Vivaz and Vivaz Pro are also said to be getting the same treatment, with new models out in 2011.
Look good? Enough to make you wait until the New Year before getting a new phone? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple iPhone Flash enabling app SkyFire nets $1 million Posted: 11 Nov 2010 02:49 AM PST SkyFire app nets $1 million in opening weekend Following years of frustration, Apple iPhone users in the US have been given the chance to run Flash video on their sleek smartphones with the creators of the Flash enabling SkyFire app reportedly netting a cool $1 million in the opening weekend of the apps launch.
Currently available exclusively via the US iPhone App Store, pending arrival in the UK, the SkyFire app, which costs just $2.99 to download is claimed by its developers to have recorded “well over 300,000” downloads.
Converting Flash video into a HTML5 friendly codec that allows Flash content to be viewed on the iPhone legally for the first time, initial overwhelming demand saw the SkyFire system crash. The draw of Flash video on the Apple handset has proven too popular for impatient iPhone users, however, as they continue to flock to the Flash enabling SkyFire overlain web browser despite the reliability issues.
Are you keen to get Flash video capabilities on your Apple iPhone? Let us know what you think of the SkyFire app coming to the UK App Store via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Facebook event next Monday: Gmail rival incoming? Posted: 11 Nov 2010 02:14 AM PST Is Zuckerberg about to up the stakes in Facebook's bitter battle with Google? Facebook is holding yet another event next Monday and already speculation is rife about just what Zuckerberg and co will have to show the assembled crowd of hacks and social media fanatics.
The gathering, which kicks off at 5.30pm UK time on 15 November, could see the official unveiling of ‘Project Titan’, the hotly-tipped webmail offering which Facebook is hoping will rival Google’s peerless Gmail.
Why? Well the invite clearly shows Facebook’s iPhone inbox icon. Tenuous, sure, but it’s enough to get tech fanatics salivating at the prospect of yet another front opening in Google and Facebook’s acrimonious battle for web supremacy.
Mark Zuckerberg has already said that Facebook will be touting one more major product in 2010. Here’s hoping it’s not just a minor tweak to its mobile site and something massive.
What has Facebook got up its sleeve? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Pure i-20: hi-fi quality digital iPod dock Posted: 11 Nov 2010 02:00 AM PST Restore the detail to your MP3s through your hi-fi The Pure i-20 is a smart way of listening to your MP3s through your hi-fi or AV set-up by letting you connect using digital or analogue outputs, so there’s no need to use a 3.5mm jack and lower the sound quality. Plug in the Pure i-20 via an analogue connection, and the hi-fi quality digital to analogue converter ensures even your compressed music files sound how they should. Which is a good thing, as there’s nothing more pointless than spending big on a hi-fi set-up to play MP3s through it.

Posted: 11 Nov 2010 01:00 AM PST Forget getting DVDs in the post, now you can streams flicks on your PS3 with Lovefilm. Last month’s news that LoveFilm was finally making its way to the PS3 had us all het up here at T3 Towers. And now, at last, the app which lets you stream from a library of 2,000 movies is finally up for grabs.
Punters who stump up for the current £5.99 a month package can get involved, as can those who pay a higher monthly fee. If you have a £9.99 bundle you can stream as many films as you like, but if you pay £5.99 you’re limited in the number of movies you can watch on your PS3.
If you use the PS3 service, it doesn’t affect your standard LoveFilm deal and you still get DVDs, Blu-rays and games in the post as normal.
And fear not, LoveFilm says that even if your broadband is as sluggish as 2Mbps, the service should work fine. The app is appearing now on your XMB, so fire up the PS3 and take a peek at what’s on offer. And don’t forget to tell us what you think of it on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Smartphone sales soar 96 per cent Posted: 11 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST Huge rise as Gartner research shows Android is closing in on top smartphone spot. Smartphone sales have risen an astonishing 96 per cent year-on-year, according to new research by analyst types Gartner. The global figures look at the third quarter of 2010, suggesting that one-in-five of all phones sold in that period were smartphones.
The big winners are undoubtedly Android and iOS. Google’s mobile colossus has soared by an epic 1,439 per cent year-on-year, its share rising to 25.5 per cent from a mere 3.5 per cent. That takes it into second place in the smartphone charts.
iOS has jumped to number three, ahead of RIM, even though its market share has slipped from 17.1 to 16.4 per cent. That fall is not as bad as the Canadian mobile maker, which has dropped from 20.7 to 14.8 per cent. iOS in this case only covers the iPhone, not the iPad and iPod touch, showing Apple is still doing the business when it comes to selling phones. Indeed, separate stats show it’s now the fourth biggest overall phone maker in the world behind Nokia, Samsung and LG. Mighty impressive seeing as it only flogs two phones, and both cost a fortune.
The figures make grim reading for Symbian, however. Sales of phones packing the OS are up, but its share has fallen from 44.6 to 36.6 per cent. It seems recent analyst predictions that Android would become number one smartphone OS in the next few years were spot on. If this rate of growth continues for Google, it’s a good bet that this time next year it’ll be sitting top of the pile.
With a string of new Android phones surely on their way as part of the imminent jump to Gingerbread, Google is in a great position. But overall, there’s no denying that 2010 has been the year the smartphone finally took over.

Steve Jobs: "AirPrint has not been pulled" Posted: 10 Nov 2010 11:33 PM PST Jobs replies to email regarding killer iOS 4.2 function. Yesterday’s report that AirPrint was being scrapped on shared printers on both Mac and PC had Apple fanboys up in arms. The wireless printing function is part of the imminent iOS 4.2, and is set to allow iOS users to print wirelessly either to a dedicated HP printer or to any machine via Mac and PC.
However, chatter yesterday suggested Apple was dropping support for the latter, essentially making AirPrint a niche feature rather than the headline grabber it was back at Apple’s iOS event in September.
But now Steve Jobs has weighed in, replying to an email which asked whether AirPrint was being scrapped and if Cupertino was now in the business of releasing vaporware. Jobs said, “AirPrint has not been pulled. Don't believe everything you read.”
Of course, this doesn’t tackle the central issue of whether AirPrint has been killed off for Mac and PC. We know it’s coming with iOS 4.2, but it seems no one is sure whether it’ll be a hamstrung version, supported by a handful of HP printers.
We’ll be keeping an eye on this story, so stay tuned here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as it happens.
