Tech Week: Gran Turismo 5 price £4.99 and Beatles iTunes

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 10:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
Gran Turismo 5 might not officially launch until next week but that hasn't stopped the long awaited title from dominating this week's headlines. The latest, and best, Gran Turismo 5 trailer to date kicked things off this week in tantalising fashion alongside the predictions that GT5 is to become the year's biggest PS3 title before it was revealed the already repeatedly postponed title is to face further delays ahead of its European launch. On a costing front the GT5 price wars kicked off with HMV announcing it is to offer Gran Turismo 5 for just £4.99. To keep you ahead of the best GT5 bargains we bring you Gran Turismo 5 prices: Cheapest deals in the UK. You're welcome.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is still going strong following its global launch last week. Having unsurprisingly topped the UK gaming charts, Activision announced Black Ops has broken all global opening week sales taking $650 million in five days, $100 million more than last years CoD offering, Modern Warfare 2. Things have not been all smooth sailing for the first person shooter, however. News struck early in the week that a Call of Duty: Black Ops patch was inbound to fix a number of multiplayer glitches. Coming to fruition the Black Ops patch is now available for Xbox 360 and PS3, developer Treyarch has announced a Wii fix will be here in the coming weeks.

Apple created quite a stir early this week when it revealed it would be making a mysterious iTunes announcement. With the declaration "Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget." rumours ran on overdrive until The Beatles landed on iTunes 20 minutes ahead of the Apple announcement. The Fab Four's belated introduction to iTunes was later confirmed by Apple before the most influential band in history went on to dominate the iTunes charts within 24 hours of going digital.

A mash-up of the week's remaining news gems to end today kicking off with the great news that the Samsung Galaxy Tab has been on the receiving end of a hefty price cut. This is followed by a couple of gaming stories as those looking to buy Kinect for Christmas are urged to snap it up this week before stocks run out whilst Facebook is expanding its gaming output as GAME and Tesco start stocking Facebook Credits. Apple finishes us off with the stories that iOS 4.2.1 has been sent to developers whilst users await iOS 4.2 and the white Apple iPhone 4 is now available thanks to a student with a Foxcomm contact and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to get multi-touch

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 07:31 AM PST

Pinch zoom lands on Xperia X10 soon

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 family recently was blessed with Android 2.1, but one thing was missing: no multi-touch.

However, the official Sony Ericsson blog has posted about their ongoing work to get pinch zoom for the Xperia X10.

Sony Ericsson will aim to release an over-the-air (OTA) update for the X10 to enable multi-touch or pinch zoom. Currently, there's no immediate date but the blog states that they aim to get it out during Q1 next year. The post says, "The timing for this update is still a bit work in progress but it will for most markets be during Q1 next year."

The plan is to enable pinch zoom in the web browser and Google Maps. The post adds, "Besides that there is also support in third party applications but because of the limitations on e.g. crossing axis there might be situations where it behaves strangely while it will work just fine for most use-cases."

They also warn enthusiastic Sony Ericsson fans not to expect multi-touch gaming.

However, with all the delays that set back Android 2.1 for the Xperia X10 series, we can only hope that this new feature lands on time.

What other features should the Xperia series have? Weigh in your opinion over at T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony PS3 to get Channel Five's on-demand service?

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 06:00 AM PST

Another on-demand service to splash across the PS3 soon?

After LoveFilm and BBC iPlayer landed on the Sony PS3, with 4oD services on its way, rumour has it that Channel Five's on-demand service, Demand Five, might end up on the Sony PlayStation 3 as well.

While PS3 users can access the catch-up service through a web browser, Channel Five might be interested in coming out with an official application for PS3 users.

According the Media Week, Channel Five is already in talks with Sony to make this happen.

In addition 2%-3% of Demand Five online viewing already comes from PS3 users, so the hope is that a dedicated application would increase those numbers further.

Are you one of the Sony PS3 users watching on-demand content? Tell us why you like it over at T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned in your your dose of tech news.

Google Street View data to be deleted within 9 months

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 02:51 AM PST

Within nine months, all the data Google unintentionally collected will be gone.

Google has vowed it will delete all the Wi-Fi data that its Street View cars inadvertently collected in the UK, within nine months.

Google had admitted to collecting data and passwords in the UK, but while the ICO found Google in breach of data protection laws, it still stands by not levying a fine on the big G.

David Smith, deputy information commissioner told the BBC, "We'd have had to find that there was substantial damage or distress to individuals from the collection of snippets of emails, URLs and passwords."

It's been a roller-coaster ride for Google Street View in the last year. To brush up your techie memory, they admitted to collecting data; then grounded their Street View cars; eventually resumed Street View photography; then was cleared of wi-fi snooping after an initial assessment; then however, they admitted collecting emails and passwords; were found in breach of UK data protection laws and now will start the process to deleting said data.

Whew.

Are you comfortable with Google Street View cars? Tell us what you think by heading over to T3's Twitter and Facebook pages and tune in for your regular tech updates.

Apple iPad 2 carbon fiber design revealed

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 01:55 AM PST

Will the Apple iPad 2 have a carbon fiber shell along with HDR photos and FaceTime?

Apple is working hard to re-invent the Apple iPad from the looks of the patent we've recently heard about.

This Apple patent will have the iPad's singular shell to be made out of carbon fiber. This move could lead to a possible advantage for the Apple iPad 2 users.

What the carbon fiber shell will do is reduce the weight of the tablet, as well as enable it with better wireless reception.

Currently, instead of carbon fiber, aluminum is what users hold in their hands, which adds weight to the iPad.

According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, the patent says the shell will be constructed from layered fiber-in-matrix type material. This would mean the case is lighter, stronger and would allow for improved WiFi and mobile broadband reception.

Apple iPad 2 enthusiasts should be warned though, the patent doesn't mean that the second version will have a sleek carbon fiber shell; it just means Apple can protect this design if a rival with similar designs goes into the tablet market.

Would you go for a carbon fiber shell iPad, or do you prefer the current version? Weigh in with your opinion at T3's Twitter feed or Facebook page, and don't forget to follow us for your regular dose of tech news.
