News@8pm: Angry Birds Christmas and iPad price drop Posted: 29 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PST Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Angry Birds rules according to T3 readers. The bird flinging uber-app took the honours in a straight shoot-out with Chillingo export, Cut the Rope, nudging over 70 per cent of the online vote. It also seems Christmas has come early to those of you generous enough to splash out 59p on Angry Birds’ Halloween version. Those kind people at Rovio have offered a free download of the Christmas themed edition.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gran Turismo 5's release has given the PlayStation 3 a mighty nudge in sales as retailers hurtle towards Christmas according to David Wilson, Head of PR at Sony, who has said the game will help cement one of their "strongest years" in history. As if to prove Sony’s bold assertion, the newly released Gran Turismo 5 has raced ahead and knocked Call of Duty: Black Ops off its pedestal as the UK’s most popular game. However, after a series of technical glitches in its first week, the game could only boast sixth position in the all-time list of PS3 launches.
Microsoft has patented technology to allow Braille-capable touchscreens. Although details are still unclear, it is thought the technology will be aimed at larger smartphone devices, with Braille eReaders another possibility. In more patent fun, it’s been revealed that PSP2 has plans to bring touchscreen tech to their much-hyped console. Pinch to zoom and a snazzy trackpad which can handle touchscreen swipes have been mooted.
Orange has unveiled its iPad contract prices. For starters, the 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G model has had a whopping £330 taken off its RRP. The catch is you’re tied into a two-year contract, so you’ll pay £30 more over time. So what happens when iPad 2 emerges? A prospective iPad contender has just hit the shelves in Japan. Sharp’s Galapagos tablet comes in two versions, the 5.5-inch Mobile and 10.8- inch Home. There’s no word on when they will hit Blighty but pricing is said to be very competitive.

60,000 fooled by Facebook ePrivacy app scam Posted: 29 Nov 2010 09:11 AM PST Facebook dummies duped once again. There's a pretty good reason why Facebook doesn't willingly tell users exactly which of their friends spends the most time on their profile page, but really, who wouldn't like to know?
That'll be the excuse of the 60,000 naive Facebook users who downloaded an app called ePrivacy which promised them access to the which of their old school friends visited their page enough times to start getting worried about.
The ePrivacy app does nothing of the sort, in fact all it does is steal your private data while posting on your profile telling friends “OMG OMG OMG… I cant believe this actually works!” making the app a very viral virus.
You already know the type of folks who have installed this app. Those who copy and paste statuses, who bombared your page with social questionnaires, beg you to fertisile their crops, type in text speak and have never once clicked on the "privacy settings" tab.
Maybe there's some sort of Darwinism going on here? A sort of Facebook survival of the fittest? Weeding them out might not be such a bad idea for the future of the human race.

Gran Turismo 5 release to drive Christmas PS3 sales Posted: 29 Nov 2010 08:47 AM PST GT5 to help push PlayStation sales for Christmas rush Sony has announced that it expects the recently released Gran Turismo 5 to be a lead driver in PlayStation hardware sales in the lead up to Christmas.
According to David Wilson, Head of PR at Sony UK, Gran Turismo 5 “will serve as a true driver of new console purchases” following “one of the strongest years in recent memory”.
He added: “We know it has been a long wait, but we genuinely believe that fans of Gran Turismo will not be disappointed. We are confident that Gran Turismo 5 will do great business between launch and Christmas.”
Despite having knocked Call of Duty: Black Ops from the top of the UK gaming charts, Gran Turismo 5 has not had the smoothest of releases since hitting stores last Wednesday. Following reports of a delay hit single player mode, owners of the pricey Signature Edition of the game where dismayed to find the exclusive content redeem codes were invalid.
Has the recent GT5 release tempted you into buying a PS3? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Microsoft touchscreen patent to bring Braille to tablets Posted: 29 Nov 2010 08:32 AM PST Microsoft patent set to help the visually impaired Microsoft has revealed a revolutionary new design patent that could pave the way for Braille-capable touchscreen devices.
Pixel-sized shape-memory plastic cells coated in a UV light reactive malleable polymer spray could soon be included on larger touchscreen devices such as tablets allowing objects and shapes to be “called to the surface” and ‘felt’ according to a report by the New Scientist.
Currently believed to be targeted only at larger touchscreen devices, it is unlikely that Braille friendly smartphones will be available in the near future. One potential use for such technology, however, could see Braille eReader devices become a reality.
Stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on this and other future technologies and share your views on such ground-breaking tech via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Angry Birds better than Cut the Rope say T3 readers Posted: 29 Nov 2010 07:52 AM PST Angry Birds dubbed 'better iPhone game' Angry Birds is of unparallel quality according to T3 readers as the bird flinging app phenomenon was dubbed a better iPhone game than fellow Chillingo export; Cut the Rope.
With both Chillingo published titles selling millions of copies apiece, the only fair way to decide which of the two addictive puzzle titles is better was by shunning the Harry Hill, TV Burp-esq fight and giving the T3 readers the casting vote in a straight up head-to-head poll.
Despite having sales in the multi-millions of units, there are some who suggest that Cut the Rope’s success is based solely on its following of Angry Birds on the Chillingo release list. However, with just 29.22 per cent of the votes, this may not be the case as almost a third of users claim to prefer it to Angry Birds.
The vast appeal of Angry Birds was summed up perfectly by T3 Facebook follower Sheldon Thomasson who understandably questioned: “How can 59p buy so much fun?”
Which side of the Angry Birds, Cut the Rope fence do you fall? Let us know by entering the T3 poll here or by dropping us a note via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Gran Turismo 5 release takes chart top spot from Black Ops Posted: 29 Nov 2010 04:31 AM PST Gran Turismo 5 tops UK gaming Charts following mid-week launch Gran Turismo 5 has driven into pole position of the UK gaming charts removing Call of Duty: Black Ops from the top step of the podium for the first time since its launch earlier this month.
Released exclusively for the PS3, Gran Turismo 5 has eclipsed all multi-platform titles to take the top spot following a repeatedly delayed and glitch hit launch last Wednesday. The record breaking Call of Duty: Black Ops was pushed to second in the UKIE/GfK-ChartTrack list followed by Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood in third with the persistent FIFA 11 in fourth.
Data collated by the GfK-ChartTrack has suggested that 94 per cent of GT5’s sales were accounted for by the game’s regular edition release with Collector’s and Signature Edition formats completing the top position sales haul. Despite forking out £150 for their Signature Edition copies of Gran Turismo 5 avid gamers were left disappointed as exclusive car redeem codes reported ‘invalid’ responses from the title’s redeem options.
The nearing Christmas period has affected the all format gaming charts over the past week with Wii Party and Wii Sports Resport titles taking seventh and ninth spots respectively. New releases Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and Michael Jackson: The Experience debuted at 14th and 32nd in the charts.
What was your game of the week of the past seven days? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and win T3’s Game of the Week; Gran Turismo 5 here.

All countries that have a Vodafone network are included, alongside France, Switzerland, Belgium and Austria.

Sharp Galapagos Tablets up for grabs Posted: 29 Nov 2010 02:10 AM PST Japan-only efforts outed, but no news on global release plans. Sharp’s been talking up is Galapagos tablets since September. And now two models, the 5.5-inch Mobile and 10.8-inch Home, have hit the shelves in the tech giant’s native Japan. Sadly though, there’s no word on when us Brits will be getting a taste of the action.
The 5.5-inch slate has a 1024 x 600 panel, with the 10.8-inch version clocking in at 1366 x 800. Each model comes with Wi-Fi and will play nice with Sharp’s much vaunted e-bookstore, which is set to offer thousands of books, mags and papers, which can be delivered automatically. Jobs and Murdoch take note.
The 5.5-inch Mobile model costs £303, while the 10.8-inch Home edition will set Japanese gadget gurus back £417. Not bad for a pair of iPad rivals.

PSP2: patents point to multitouch and trackpad Posted: 29 Nov 2010 01:02 AM PST Seven new patents detail plans for much-anticipated handheld console. The PSP2 just will not go away right now. The latest tittle tattle about the next-gen handheld hub centres around a slew of new patents, unearthed by PlayStation Lifestyle, which show plans to bring touchscreen tech to the much-hyped device.
The patents point to the inclusion of pinch-to-zoom skills, as well as plans to include a trackpad which would handle touchscreen swipes without you having to prod the panel itself. The idea is to give gamers the chance to see the whole screen without obscuring it with their greasy paws.
One of the patents suggests this could lead to the inclusion of a ‘Track Back Touch Pad’, from where finger movements could be detected and played out on screen. This ties in with previous rumours about such a unique interface.
The patents show a string of different designs for the PSP2, suggesting the final model is yet to be nailed down. How a rear trackpad would work in the wild is something that remains unclear.

Sony: Move can be more precise Posted: 29 Nov 2010 12:04 AM PST Just because it can be more precise, doesn't mean it needs to be, says Sony. Sony has admitted that its million-selling Move motion controller can be more precise. But software engineer Anton Mikhailov has said that just because it can get more accurate, doesn’t mean it needs to be updated right now.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Mikhailov said, “We can certainly update it through firmware. The real question is, do we want to? So far we haven't had any real requests from studios to improve the accuracy. There are a couple of issues here and there we can fix, but the majority the games are not even taxing it to its full accuracy."
Mikhailov also added that gamers weren’t necessarily that keen on the controller being pinpoint accurate, as it made games tougher. He pointed to Sports Champion’ expert difficulty, which he said got rid of assists and made the game as hard as possible.
Mikhailov stated that any updates would be decided on once Sony thought there was a need for more precision. Sony has sold Move on the premise that it’s much more accurate than the Wii and its trailblazing controllers. Is it right? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Orange iPad contract deals detailed Posted: 28 Nov 2010 11:43 PM PST Deals unveiled by Orange, but is monthly cost too much? Orange has officially pulled the wrappers off of its iPad contracts and they’re pretty much just as we expected. The 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G model will set you back £199 on a two year deal, down from £529 SIM-free.
Those after more storage can get the 32GB model for £249 and the 64GB for £299. So, how much do you need to pay every month once you’ve stumped up your initial fee? New punters will need to find £27 a month, while existing Orange customers get a cut price £25 deal.
For that you get 1GB of anytime data a month 1GB of data for use between 4pm and midnight and free access to BT Openzone’s Wi-Fi hotspots. That seems a tad miserly considering Three’s current SIM deals for the iPad tout a massive 10GB of data for just £15 a month. That, admittedly, is part of a SIM-only package. Three is planning to unveil pricing for its contract-shackled iPads soon.
You can register your interest with Orange now. But with other networks yet to unveil their exact price plans, we’d hold fire before busting out your credit card.
Is Orange asking too much? Or is this the price you pay for having the tastiest tablet in town? Tell us what you think on Facebook and Twitter.
