News@8pm: Galaxy Tab price cut and Apple iTunes event

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple attacks iTunes and the software front today as it announces a surprise iTunes event will be held at 3pm GMT tomorrow that "you'll never forget". Lofty words from the Cupertino company. The news of the announcement comes after it emerged that the iOS 4.2 update has been delayed until November 24th. Something that looks to have passed its delays, however, is iAds the in-app advertising system set to be launched across Europe by Apple this week.

Gadget price reductions have been all the rage today as some of the hottest recent releases get a hefty wedge of their price tags removed. First off was the Samsung Galaxy Tab which has dropped well below the £500 mark thanks to Amazon and Dixons. This is followed by Kinect now priced £235 with an Xbox 360 at Tesco and the PSP Go which has also been on the receiving end of a price cut. Wallet friendliness all round.

HTC Desire dominance continues as the latest Desire incarnation the HTC Desire HD has been declared the best new Android handset by you the faithful T3 reader. This comes on the same day that Virgin Media has stopped shuffling its feet and offered its HTC Desire users the Android 2.2, FroYo, update that landed on fellow networks months ago. About time really.

Gaming's future giants have been out in force a lot as of late with today acting no different as Gran Turismo 5 Course Maker leaked ahead of the game's November 24th global launch. The GT5 outing is joined by news from Nintendo that the second coming of the Wii, the Wii 2, will not land in 2011 or until the original console sales top 45 million units. Don't mark your calendars just yet then.

Apple iTunes announcement you'll "never forget" tomorrow

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 08:22 AM PST

iTunes announcement to land 3pm tomorrow

With iTunes 10.1 landing at the weekend and the upcoming iOS 4.2 update for iPhone and iPad on the horizon, Apple has seemingly snuck in another mystery launch pegged for 3pm GMT tomorrow.

Revealed via a teasing image on iTunes, Apple has dubbed the event an “exciting announcement” and one “that you’ll never forget” with no further information other than four world clocks displaying the time of the event in California, New York, London and Tokyo.

"Tomorrow is just another day. That you’ll never forget. Check back here tomorrow for an exciting announcement from iTunes.” read the full release.

Whilst we can’t image such a well kept Apple secret could be something we will “never forget”, the prospect of a mystery Apple launch sure is a tantalising one. Many somewhat hopeful rumours of tomorrow's late notice announcement point towards the arrival iOS 4.2, the full Beatles catalogue, a Mac App Store or a cloud-based iTunes service.

Stay tuned to T3.com for a full round-up of tomorrow’s mystery Apple event and let us know your thoughts on what will be unveiled via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Kinect price drop sees Xbox bundle just £235 at Tesco

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 07:40 AM PST

Kinect and Xbox bundle loses £15

Supermarket giant Tesco has announced that it is to turn its back on Microsoft’s Suggested Retail Price of the recently released Kinect peripheral as it looks to capitalise on the Christmas interest in the controller-free motion gaming device.

Available exclusively in-store, the dominant retailer is to cut £15 from the Kinect, Xbox 360 bundle price offering the package for just £235. The cut-price bundle deal includes an Xbox 360 console with 4GB Flash Memory, the Kinect peripheral and a copy of the Kinect Adventures title.

With early reports suggesting that Kinect stocks are to sell out ahead of the final Christmas push, Tesco’s cut price offering isn’t likely to be around for long. Online retailer Amazon is currently offering the same Kinect bundle for the £249.99 SRP whilst Play.com has the set at £276.

Kinect ready titles infiltrated the gaming charts this week with the flagship Kinect Sports title landing at No. 4 in the charts followed by Dance Central in 13th and Motion Sports in 15th.

What game would you like to see porting into a controller-free Kinect environment? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone app judges calories by taking pictures of food

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 07:38 AM PST

Take picture of pint. Upload picture. Repeat 6 times.

A new iPhone app will judge how many calories are in the food you're about to eat, just by taking a picture of it.

The app, developed by NTT Communications of Japan, will use the photo to cross reference against a 100,000-strong database of pictures and report back the bad news before you dig in to your bacon double cheesebergers.

The as-yet-unnamed app, which is going through the final stages of development, could be a god-send for calorie counters who are unable to get nutritional information when eating in cafes or restaurants.

While we can't imagine that it'll pick up every layer of cheese, or whether the meat in your burger is lean or not, but it'd be a more than helpful guide that'll also save the hassle of manually inputting the calorie counts and portion sizes for everything that passes your lips.

A beta version for the app will be released in Japan in January.

Gran Turismo 5 leaks ramp up ahead of launch

With the official launch date of Gran Turismo 5 being announced late last week as November 24th, a number of hands-on leaks of the upcoming racing sim have begun to emerge with GT5’s Course Maker getting its outing.

Following countless delays and postponements, GT5 is set to hit UK shelves next week with what will be, judging by the video below, a hearty and extensively customisable track creator option.

With a number of preset tracks to manipulate on all surface types and with interchangeable weather conditions, gamers can get behind the wheel atop their new layout creations as they try to put in the perfect lap. With what looks like a friendly user interface, the Course Maker of the upcoming release should offer some exciting personalisation options to a gaming franchise that has traditionally being quite stoic and straight-laced.

Previously dated to launch on November 2nd, Gran Turismo 5 will put five years or waiting and $60 million of production costs to a final hurrah next week when avid gamers and GT fans will rejoice at its eventual launch.

Are you still enchanted by the graphic delights and depth of gameplay brought by Gran Turismo 5 or disheartened by its continued delays? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the game’s upcoming arrival.

Call of Duty: Black Ops release tops UK gaming charts

Black Ops knocks Football Manager 2011 from top of gaming charts

The recordbreaking launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops has seen Activision’s first-person shooter dominate the All Formats All Prices UK Video Game Chart taking top spot from last week’s No.1, Football Manager 2011.

Shifting 1.4 million copies in its opening day in the UK alone to take a tidy £58 million, the latest addition of the Call of Duty franchise easily claimed the chart top spot ahead of EA’s FIFA 11 in second with Just Dance 2, Kinect Sports and Football Manager 2011 rounding out the top five respectively.

Following the UK launch of Microsoft’s controller-free motion gaming peripheral Kinect last week, a number of the gesticulation-lead titles landed in the chart’s top 40. The hip-shaking Dance Central was the first Kinect title landing 13th in the chart followed by Motion Sports at 15, Fighters Uncaged, 23, Kinectimals, 26, Kinect Joy Ride, 30, and Sonic Free Riders in 38th.

Having broken records in the days following its launch, Call of Duty: Black Ops is now the 1/6 odds on favourite with bookmaker Paddy Power to top the charts come Christmas day.

HTC Desire HD is the best new Android phone, say T3 readers

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 03:43 AM PST

Android's second coming will be headed by the Desire's update

T3's polls always get the biggest response when Android's involved; a lot of you are devout lovers of Google's mobile platform. Last week's burning question was no different, generating big numbers. We asked which of the new breed of Android devices will be best, and the results spoke for themselves.

While the budget LG Optimus One and the upcoming Dell Thunder sat at the bottom of the table (with 7 and 6 per cent respectively), Samsung's Continuum wasn't much better, pulling in just 10.23 per cent of your votes. The new handset, which features dual Super AMOLED displays, was beaten in this instance by another (possible) Samsung number – the Google Nexus Two. The Nexus Two is now heavily rumoured to be called the Nexus S, but it only won favour with 20.45 per cent of you.

That leaves on clear winner then: The HTC Desire HD. The original Desire won Phone of the Year at the 2010 T3 Gadget Awards, and its successor has certainly impressed both us and a stonking 65.63 per cent of you. Want to see why? Read our full HTC Desire HD review here.

If you voted for a different Android handset, or if we've missed one out, let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Apple iAds to be given European launch this week

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 03:27 AM PST

iAds fails to attract advertisers with $1 million minimum spend

Apple is expected to announce the European arrival of its in-app advertising campaign iAds later this week following a somewhat rocky start to the service’s existence in the US.

The UK and Europe launch of iAds has reportedly twice been delayed in recent weeks as the Cupertino company fights against waning interest in the system that has a minimum $1 million spend for advertisers.

Despite keen interest and praise being heaped on Apple’s iAds when unveiled earlier this year, the system that was predicted to transform mobile advertising to reach its true potential many large advertising agencies have since become disenchanted with the idea. “They are expensive and a pain to deal with” proclaimed one agency’s digital leader whilst another announced: “Apple is still figuring out how to sell advertising.”

The advertising strategy which allows companies to target iPhone and iPod Touch users is expected to have two or three campaigns running to a European market by the end of the year with many more to follow in 2011.

What do you think of Apple’s in-app advertising strategy, an intriguing way of discovering new products or a shameless money-spinner? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Toshiba Folio 100 Android tablet pulled

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 03:01 AM PST

10.1-inch effort was poorly received, with lack of Android Market to blame.

If you were planning on nabbing the new Toshiba Folio 10 tablet in the next few days, your options have just been severely limited. It turns out the FroYo-loaded slate has already been pulled by PC World, with its DSG partners, including dixons.co.uk, following suit.

The move comes a mere ten days after the super-size machine went on sale in Europe. The reason? PC World says it has had a large number of returns, with customers disappointed with a device that seriously undercut the Galaxy Tab. The 16GB model costs just £329, compared to the Galaxy Tab’s new £479 price tag.

Customers are said to have complained about the failure to include Flash, despite Android 2.2 being geared up for the Adobe platform. Android Market is also missing, while others have said the touchscreen’s lack of pinch-to-zoom has left them disappointed.

While it doesn’t mean you can’t get the Folio 100 if you shop around, PC World’s move suggests that Tosh’s iPad-rival will never really get off the ground.

Has Toshiba scored an own-goal by rush-releasing the Folio 100? Did you buy one? If so, make sure you tell us about your experiences over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Update: We've since been in contact with Toshiba about the Folio 100 being pulled who released the following statement:

“Toshiba UK is aware of reports regarding customer returns of FOLIO 100, and is currently working with Dixons Retail to provide a solution. An update on availability will be provided in due course.”

PSP Go UK price cut again

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 03:00 AM PST

Handheld struggling to attract gaming attention?

The PSP Go is set to drop in price yet again just weeks after Sony introduced a wordwide reduction to its handheld gaming device.

Earlier this month, Sony announced that it was slashing the price of the PSP Go in the US, Japan and Europe with UK customers having seen the RRP go from £225 to £159.99.

On the UK Sony Store, the Go now prices in at £129.99 which is a drop of £30, making the cuts since November 1st total in at just under £100.

In what is likely to be a response to disappointing sales of the device since it launched in October last year, some argue the generous reductions could be in preparation for a new handheld from Sony rumoured to either be a PSP 2 or the PSP Phone which was snapped earlier this month.

Will the latest price drop now convince you to snap up a PSP Go or are you planning to wait to see if the PSP 2 or PSP Phone surfaces? Lets us know via Twitter and Facebook.

Update: Sony has announced that the price cut which appeared on the Sony Store UK website is a 'website error' and will be amended later today. So, no cheaper PSP Go then folks.

Virgin Media HTC Desire gets Android 2.2 FroYo update

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 02:57 AM PST

Virgin Media customers finally given FroYo for Desire update

Months after HTC Desire users on other networks added a dollop of Frozen Yogurt to their handsets, Virgin Media customers are today being offered the Android 2.2, FroYo, update for their iPhone-challenging Google powered devices.

“We’ve started sending out the Froyo update as of 9am this morning,” read Virgin Media’s official release on the long overdue OS update.

Virgin Media’s Desire contingent looking to add 720p video recording support, Flash Player 10.1 and increased Wi-Fi hotspot abilities to their FroYo compatible handsets must first ensure their pocket blower is running the latest Virgin firmware package: “this is only for customers on our Virgin specific firmware (1.23.351.1). Customers on the original firmware (1.15.405.4) will need an update to the 1.23.351.1 firmware first before they can install the Froyo update.”

“This is an FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) update which means that you will be prompted to download the update on their handset. We strongly recommend that you use a Wi-Fi connection to download the update. You’ll be asked if you want to back up your handset first, and we recommend this as well.” stated the Virgin Media release.

Nintendo: Wii 2 once Wii sells 45 million

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 02:17 AM PST

Reggie Fils-Aime opens up about Wii 2 plans.

Nintendo America’s Reggie Fils-Aime is never shy about coming forward on all matters Ninty. But his latest bit of natter is bound to disappoint those gagging for the Wii 2.

See, the main man has said that with the current Wii still doing the business, hitting 30 million units across the pond, he doesn’t think it’s time to start talking about the much-mooted follow-up to the planet’s bestselling console.

“As we sit here today we're saying the Wii has many, many more units to sell," said Reggie. “After we've reached an installed base of 45 million here in the US, we can have a conversation about the next generation."

- What do you expect of the Wii 2? Answer our Poll to let us know

That could mean we have a lengthy wait, even if Reggie is just trying to pull attention back onto this year’s Wii lineup. However, with the PS3 and Xbox 360 both getting a new lease of life thanks to Move and Kinect respectively, Nintendo is going to have to make its move soon. Don’t be surprised if E3 2011 sees the Japanese giant tease something new and Wii-shaped.

Facebook email will not be Gmail rival says source

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 01:02 AM PST

New offering set to be unveiled at 6pm UK time today.

Facebook’s new email service is set to get official today. But insiders have suggested the spanking new service won’t be a straight-up rival to Gmail and Windows Live, instead tying into the social network’s current infrastructure.

A “person with knowledge of Facebook’s plans” told The New York Times that the offering wasn’t meant to be used solely as an email service, implying that it would work seamlessly with functions such as Facebook Chat and the recently upgraded Groups feature.

“They are not trying to do a standalone rival to Gmail. They are building an integrated experience in everything they do,” the source said.

Rumours have previously suggested this would include offering the new package as part of a beefed up mobile service, as well as providing an enhanced notification system. Email addresses are expected to have the @facebook.com suffix.

Samsung Galaxy Tab price slashed

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 12:03 AM PST

Slate price slips below £500 mark as Android effort looks to take on iPad.

Still holding out on a Samsung Galaxy Tab? Well, now might be the time to the pull the trigger, as the Android-fuelled iPad rival has fallen below the £500 price mark.

Both Dixons and Amazon have dropped the cost of the SIM-free 16GB slate. The latter is offering the Galaxy Tab for £469, while Amazon has it listed for £479. Both prices include free delivery.

The Android 2.2 tablet has been well-received, but it’s still unclear how it’s faired in its first weeks on sale. Doubtless Samsung will be happy to see lower prices if it means more of its iPad-bothering wares finding their way under Christmas trees next month.

Is this price drop enough? Or is the Galaxy Tab’s cost still a tad too hefty? Tell us what you think now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iOS 4.2 now delayed until 24 November?

Posted: 14 Nov 2010 11:33 PM PST

Further delays hit iPad-centric update to iOS.

iOS 4.2 had been expected to be sitting pretty on iPhones and iPads everywhere by now. But it seems the major upgrade to the mobile OS has been pushed back even further, with a 24 November release date being mooted.

The news comes from The Telegraph, which says it’s spoken to “a reliable source” about the matter. It was suggested last week that iOS 4.2 would be out by this Tuesday, having initially been slated to land on 8 November.

Apple says the upgrade is still on track, having always maintained it would be unleashed in November, but never confirming a specific release date. Word is that Wi-Fi problems with the final build of iOS 4.2 have been affecting the iPad and tweaks are now being made to fix the issue.

As well as these niggles, the much-hyped AirPrint feature is set to arrive without Mac and PC support. Has Apple taken too long to release iOS 4.2? Or would you rather it took its time and got things spot on? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
