Skype 5.0 Beta now available for Mac following PC arrival

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 10:17 AM PDT

Skype 5.0 for Mac has now opened up its beta period for all users.

If you use Skype and you own a Mac then great news as the upcoming version 5.0 of the VoIP service is on its way with the beta edition made available for the Apple branded machines for the first time.

In mix fate offering, the Mac version of Skype 5.0 will bring some Apple exclusive improvements to the service whilst cutting out a number of features seen in the PC edition.

The biggest loss for Mac users is the ommison of being able to bring Facebook friends into a conversation, a feature that has proven popular with users of the Microsoft Skype 5.0 upgrade that came out last month.

Don’t fret though as there are plenty of improvements that include a total revamp, group video calling, offline instant messages, a new Mac-friendly user interface and full integration with user's Mac address books.

Downloaded the Mac compatibly Skype 5.0 beta or an early adoptee of the PC friendly version? Share your thoughts and experiences with the VoIP beta with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook pages.

Skyfire brings Flash to iPhone then swiftly takes it away

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 09:40 AM PDT

The Skyfire Flash app for the iPhone has been 'sold out' in the Apple app store.

If you thought that the app store had a bottomless pit of apps, think again. Skyfire’s Flash enabling app for the Apple iPhone has already 'sold out' just hours after going on sale Wednesday afternoon.

An app being sold out is a concept we thought was not possible, however it is indeed currently unavailable after huge demand crashed the creator's servers. Jeffrey Glueck, Skyfire Chief Executive said “"Skyfire has historically generated high demand for its browser products but nothing like this. It was hard to predict consumer demand since this was our first paid app, but we were blown away by the demand and sales."

With the Skyfire app converting Flash videos into a HTML5 complicit codec via the Skyfire servers, the sheer number of purchases and requests overwhelmed the app developer's system, proving more than they could handle. For now it seems that they are regrouping and preparing themselves for a greater number when they start selling the app again.

Did you manage to get your hands on a copy of the app before it sold out? Or were you one of the people about to buy it before the plug was pulled? Let us hear your thoughts on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is "best on Xbox 360"

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 08:46 AM PDT

Xbox proclaims self worth ahead of Call of Duty release

With the price wars of the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops release kicking in to top gear today as HMV announced it was to offer the title for just £7.99, the battle of the brands is following suit with Microsoft claiming dominance of the much anticipated game.

Xbox’s Director of Entertainment and Marketing, Stephen McGill, whilst talking with MCV, boldly proclaimed that the Xbox 360 is the best console to play Call of Duty: Black Ops and “everyone knows” it.

"Obviously everyone knows the best place to play Black Ops is on Xbox 360. But there are so many great games still to come out. For Q4 there hasn't been a better line-up for years." Probed McGill.

The unprompted attack on rivals Sony comes ahead of a big week for Xbox which, as well as targeting the largest game release of the year in CoD: Black Ops, will see the UK arrival of its well hyped motion gaming peripheral, Kinect. "With Kinect and Call of Duty it's an incredible week for retail; they are going to be so busy," said the Xbox head.

Many retailers are expected to open doors at midnight twice next week with large crowds of eager gamers and Christmas shoppers keen to get their hands on the latest addition to the Call of Duty franchise and one of the year’s must have festive gifts.

Supermarket chain Asda is one such retail giant that will be inviting gamers to queue for middle of the night store openings with more than 200 branches expected to invite gamers in for Black Ops and Kinect.

Call of Duty: Black Ops or Microsoft Kinect? Which gaming launch will have you queuing in the wee hours? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPhone 5 to feature NFC technology for data transfer?

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 08:04 AM PDT

iPhone 5 rumour mill produces another gem

With the white Apple iPhone 4 now all but sentenced to the realms of Neverland, focus has switched to the upcoming Apple iPhone 5 with latest rumours suggesting the expected handset will feature NFC technologies.

Near Field Communication has long been something Apple has been believed to be working on for its handsets with recent reports suggesting the short range wireless technology that allows multiple devices to communicate and transfer data between themselves.

Believed to be finding a home in the next rendition of Apple’s market leading smartphone, NFC technologies would allow users to transfer and store essential information from their Mac computers on their pocket blowers. When in close proximity to a universally compatible Mac, users would then be able to use the machine as if it were their own device with the iPhone stored data transferred to the setup.

Whilst this will not see the end of laptops, the NFC tech would allow users to store bookmarks, passwords and select documents on their handset like a digitally wireless USB drive.

What features would you like to see added to the mooted Apple iPhone 5? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

The Times' Eureka science magazine comes to iPad

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 06:51 AM PDT

Another UK Mag joins T3 on the iPad

The Times newspaper has built on its iPad portfolio by adding its monthly science supplement Eureka to the App Store.

The digital magazine, which is available separately from the £10-a-month The Times newspaper service, has been brought to life with exclusive video, audio, beautiful extended galleries as well as interactive elements and psychometric tests.

“We’re incredibly proud of the Eureka app. When we were in the design process we didn’t want to create a purely functional app.

"Instead, what we wanted was an app that would wow, amaze and excite people, capturing the essence of Eureka in digital format,” said Robert de Souza, digital project manager at The Times.

The first issue, with a focus on science and sport, is available to download now for 59p. We'd hope that more issues follow shortly as it's good to see more magazines follow T3 on to the iPad.

Call of Duty: Black Ops UK release price £7.99 at HMV

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 05:04 AM PDT

Call of Duty: Black Ops price wars begin

With the much anticipated launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops now just a few short days away, highstreet retailer HMV has upped the price wars anti by announcing it will be offering the mooted game of the year to wannabe owners for just £7.99.

Cutting a hefty £47 of the title’s official £54.99 RRP, the rock bottom HMV price is not without its catches as gamers looking to capitalise on the sub £10 offer will also have to hand over their copies of the recently released CoD competitor, EA’s Medal of Honor. Yesterday it emerged that Black Ops would face the censor's cutting room floor ahead of its rollout.

Accommodating all format gamers, both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of the game are being offered by HMV in the cut-price deal that will run from the games official UK launch on November 9th until the following Monday, November 15th.

Last year’s addition to the CoD franchise, Modern Warfare 2 saw fiercely competitive pricings across all retailers with supermarket chain Sainsbury’s offer the game for an opening day low of £26. So far the price wars surrounding Black Ops have been notably calmer.

Will you be attending one of the many midnight openings for Call of Duty: Black Ops when it is launched next week? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the new CoD including pricing and launch night exclusives.

The touchscreen slate 003SH has a 9.6 megapixel camera with a 720p video, while The QWERTY-sliding 005SH only has an 8 megapixel camera, no word on the video capture. Facebook Mobile event: Software updates explained

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 04:04 AM PDT

Facebook reveals its mobile cards, including updates to Android

Last night’s Facebook mobile event left a lot of journalist cold as rumours that the company were due to launch a branded handset we quelled by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. That’s not to say, however, that the event was a washout, with Facebook revealing and cementing its plans for further mobile integration over the course of the next few years.

The big announcements were threefold: ‘Single Sign-on’, ‘Location APIs’ and the ‘Deals Platform’. We've got a run down of what each actually means after the break:

- Single Sign-on
Similar to how Android Devices sync your calendars and contacts from Gmail, this is basically a system Facebook is setting into place so that you need only sign in to facebook once for your info to appear across calendars, apps and websites.

- Location APIs
Essentially: further integration for Places. Facebook’s APIs will allow app developers to capitalise on information about where you are and where you’ve been. This could be in the form of FourSquare-style offers or even games - it’s up to the developers, but the point is that it’ll now be easy to take that data and transfer it to other uses.

- Deals Platform
Bsically a more advanced advertising strategy, the Deals Platform will help those eking money from Facebook ads to do so more effectively thanks to increased location, likes, friends and personality data.

Those are the major headlines, then, but what else? Zuckerberg did give Android lovers some good news, adding that the platform’s app is due for a much-needed update to stay in line with the more polished iPhone app. "Traditionally the Android app has always been a little bit behind," he conceded. "We didn't have a full team working on it, but now we're back on track." Lastly, Zuckerberg took a swipe at the iPad, declaring that it’s not portable. He said: “the iPad is not mobile… It’s a computer.”

Samsung wants to hit the magic number of 1 million for the Galaxy Tabs

The Samsung Galaxy Tab may have recently launched but the company claims that there is a very stong demand for their tablet and they aim to hit more than one million sales of the device by the end of this year.

Samsung's mobile division chief JK Shin said there was a lot of interested in Europe and Asia for the Galaxy tab.

Kinect launches planned by UK stores

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 02:00 AM PDT

It's going to be a massive launch for the Kinect

The Microsoft Xbox Kinect is releasing in the UK on November 10, while our American gamers will get their hands on it today.

UK retailers look to go all-out for the launch by spending a lot on marketing and planning midnight lauch events. According to MCV, stores are planning Kinect charts and in-store demo areas.

GAME trading director Adam Davis told MCV that they have been running Kinect evenings in its stores. He added, "I think we are one of the only retailers to really evangelise Kinect, and we’ve done it with the constraints we have in terms of square footage."

Apart from GAME, Asda is also getting in on the act, with 200 midnight openings on it cards. Asda buyer Alastair Islip said that they are treating the Kinect as they would a launch of a new console. They have a dedicated space in their entertainment department with software charts and training videos.

The controller-less motion gaming tech that is the Microsoft Xbox Kinect is stirring up quite a buzz already with its launch events and has already old out by pre-order at many retailers.

Will you be attending midnight launch events for the Kinect? Tell us where and why over at T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and follow us for gaming updates.

Google breached UK data laws, says ICO

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 01:42 AM PDT

The ICO finally weighs in on its position with the Google Street View saga.

UK's Information Commissioner's Office has finally spoken out about its ruling on the Google Street View wi-fi snooping issue.

Google, which admitted to have collected emails and passwords, had earlier this year been cleared of wi-fi snooping by the ICO.

However, after their admission, the ICO has now said that there was a 'significant breach' of the Data Protection Act. Google had inadvertently collected personal data through equipment in its Street View vehicles.

However, they said that Google will not be subjected to a fine or punishment; rather the ICO will carry out an audit of Google's data protection practices.

Google is also expected to delete the data as soon as it is "legally cleared to do so".

Google has always maintained that it collected the data unknowingly and has apologized for it since the details came to light.

Virgin Media announces 1TB 3D/HD TiVo box

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 01:18 AM PDT

With 500 hours of content and 1TB storage, would we leave our sofas?

Virgin Meda has launched a 1TB TiVo set top box which is made by Cisco, which was announced almost a year ago. The 3D/HD set top box has a 1TB drive, which is definitely a lot more than what's available currently.

According to Virgin Media, the set top box which is powered by its fibre optic network, is able to store up to 500 hours of content. It also has a modem which allows users to benefit from HD video and online services without involving the user's broadband lines.

No pricing details have been announced, nor do we know when the 1TB top box would be made available.

It's quite possible Virgin Media was having a dig at Sky Anytime+ when it said that: "Competitors’ ‘connected TV’ products rely on just one central broadband connection, typically DSL, making it difficult for families to watch online TV or TV on Demand and take advantage of the internet at the same time".

Are you excited by the new set top box offerings in the UK? Tell us why on T3's Twitter and Facebook and keep tuned in for regular updates on all things tech.
