News@8pm: Apple dominates but Android is the future

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

New Google OS to launch this month. After its success with the Android OS, Google is apparently going to launch its much mooted Chrome OS later this month. The company's immediate focus, however, is on the charges it faces for capturing people's emails and passwords via its Street View cars. The ICO spokesperson gave the company's opinion on the Google situation.

iPad dominates the Tablet world. Apple currently holds an enormous 95% of the Tablet PC market with the iPad alone, but will it remain at the top? It's going to be a tough job for the Apple tablet to keep its position as two new Android Tablets have been announced, the 7-inch and 10-inch Creative ZiiO. Apple's going to have some Tablet competition this Christmas.

4OD has evolved into something else. Well, Film4 has joined Channel 4 in creating an 'on demand' website. Film4OD has launched with over 500 movie titles. Unfortunately, unlike its sister site, 4OD, Film4OD will be charging for its services. Grr! If you really want to spend your money on something worth while, check out the new Movember themed Flip cameras. Funky styles and all in the name of a charity, mate.

Androids are the future. Well at least they seem to be creating a better future for mobile phone technology. Dell says that it's easier to build a Windows phone 7 with an Android. Is the iPhone going to be obsolete? Maybe so, especially with the help of 8pen, the Android app that has reinvented the touchscreen keyboard by using gestures instead of keys. Next we'll be waving our hands and making rabbits appear out of hats.

Apple cuts price of Mac mini ahead of Christmas period

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 09:53 AM PDT

Apple do the unthinkable and make a product more wallet friendly

Apple has quietly lowered the price of the recently released Apple Mac mini, knocking £50 of the device's lofty price making the basic model of the micro desktop powerhouse now £599.

Whilst European markets saw €100 chopped from the Mac mini, the £50 removed from the UK pricing eclipses the US savings, which in an unusual move have not materialised.

Refreshed back in June
, Apple downsized the mini making it even smaller than its predecessor whilst adding a HDMI port to the device for HD TV connectivity.

Whilst the standard 2.4GHz, 2GB of memory, 320GB hard drive touting mini has been cut from £649 to a somewhat more reasonable £599, the higher speced 2.66GHz, 4GB of memory rocking edition of the mini that sports dual 500GB hard drives has seen its unfriendly £929 price tag snipped to a slightly more acceptable £879.

Although this is good news for Christmas shoppers who were looking to snap themselves up an Apple flavoured bargain this festive period, we sadly can’t see the popular iPhone 4, iPod Touch or iPad following suit.

Which one Apple product would you like to see the Cupertino company knock £50 off? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

8pen for Android reinvents the touchscreen keyboard

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 07:36 AM PDT

Gesture-controlled keyboard negates need for tiny keys

It's no secret that fluent typing on most mobile touchscreens is harder than watching a Simply Red music video without vomiting blood, but the 8pen keyboard for Android hopes to ease your pain.

The app, which will be available to download from the Android Market later today, says it reinvents the keyboard for the touchscreen era by using a series of gestures instead of key presses.

The characters are divided into quadrants with circular motions from a centre point helping users to type the word. It's extremely complex, and we'd be here all day trying to explain it to you, so we'd advise you to check out the video below.

While Swype simplifies mobile typing, we're not sure about this. If you can learn the rationale and get used to using the app, it might save you a bit of time and frustration.

Creative ZiiO 7- and 10-inch Android tablets announced

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 07:35 AM PDT

Creative unveils two new Android tablets

Creative has become the latest tech manufacturer to announce it is to release an Android powered tablet as the 7-inch and a 10-inch Creative ZiiO tablet devices are officially unveiled.

Both the 7-inch and 10-inch editions of the Creative ZiiO will be available in 8GB and 16GB storage size iterations when they hit shelves early in December sporting Google’s Android 2.1 mobile operating system, inbuilt forward-facing cameras with accompanying mics and full Wi-Fi connectivity.

Thanks to the company’s X-Fi Crystalizer and X-Fi Expand technologies, Creative is boasting that the ZiiO tablets will offer the best wireless audio performance of any Android tablet as well as featuring Bluetooth capabilities, an accelerometer and a microSD card slot.

The 7-inch and 10-inch resistive touchscreens will reportedly tout 16.8 million and 262K colours respectively with the devices also equipped with inbuilt GPS, FM radio and a composite video-out connection port.

Prices for the ZiiO tablets have been announced by Creative, severely undercutting the Apple iPad and recently released Samsung Galaxy Tab yet falling wayward of the Android powered tablets available to buy from highstreet retailers Next and the ultra budget tablet being offered by Toys ‘R’ Us. The 8GB 7-inch ZiiO is set to cost wannabe owners £199.99 with its larger capacity 16GB sibling coming in at £219.99. Similarly the 8GB 10-inch model will come in priced £249.99 with the 16GB edition to land at £369.99

With all the recently announced and released Android powered tablets doing the rounds, which one takes your fancy ahead of the Christmas shopping rush? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 4 used for teaching maths at Imperial College

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 04:28 AM PDT

Getting a degree? There's an app for that

Maths Professor Richard Thomas has employed a new teaching technique at the Imperial College London, via the use of iPhones, Androids and other smartphones.

At the beginning of the class students link their iPhone or other device up to an interactive web page set up specifically for them, in order to test their maths skills. Once everyone is connected, Thomas creates a random equation and writes it down for the students. Then, via the interactive web page, he gives the students multiple choice answers that are beamed onto their screens.

The class is then given a few minutes to work out the equation and “vote” for the answer, they do this by selecting one of the choices and submitting it. Once all of the answers are in there is a short delay followed by the appearance of a simple bar graph on the students’ iPhones. The results display the collective percentage of answers from the class at which point Thomas reveals the right answer.

While not all of the staff at Imperial support this new form of teaching, Thomas is adamant that his iPhone method is a quick and simple way that “disrupts the ‘copy down lecture notes’ mentality.” It also engages the students more and allows the shyer types to contribute without being the centre of attention, he claims.

Will this new form of teaching kick off and spread to every school and college in the country? Is the future of teaching held in the hands of the technology that surrounds us now? What are your views on using iPhones for teaching? Let us know via our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Apple iPad makes up 95% of tablet market share

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 04:08 AM PDT

The latest market research suggests that Apple dominates the Tablet PC market.

Apple is controlling the majority of the Tablet PC market with a huge 95% stake. It's a success solely down to the iPad, which was released earlier this year and has driven Apple's charge to victory.

Considering the fact that these figures are from the third quarterly results alone shows how well the Apple iPad has done in its short time since release.

This could all change though, what with Samsung launching the 7-inch Galaxy Tab in the UK, while Dell and HP are soon to make big tablet debuts before Christmas.

That said, whilst Apple may own 95% of the Tablet PC market, Android has dropped from 2.9% to 2.3%, so the Google platform certainly has it's work cut out for it. Christmas will be the ultimate tablet showdown and only time will tell who will come out on top. What do you think will be the most popular Tablet this year? Let us know via our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Dell: Windows Phone 7 easier to build with than Android

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 03:44 AM PDT

Plus: Dell pushes into the tablet race

While speaking at an event in Hong Kong yesterday, Dell CEO Michael Dell revealed that his company is to push into the tablet market in a big way in 2011, with a number of devices looking set to join the imminent 7-inch version of the Dell Streak.

That wasn’t all that left Dell’s lips, though, as he revealed that he found it easier to develop and build Windows Phone 7 handsets than it is Android handsets. Microsoft’s slick new mobile platform has been picking up the praise at the consumer end recently, and it’ll only be further aided by this kind of support at the very back end.

The company is just about to launch two near identical smartphones – the Android powered Thunder and the Windows Phone 7-powered Venue Pro – and, while only time will tell as to which one is the more successful, we now certainly know which one Dell prefers.

Google Chrome OS expected to launch later this month

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 03:43 AM PDT

Google Chrome OS coming this month?

Following the phenomenal success of its mobile operating system, Android, Google is said to be readying its Chrome OS for computer devices to launch later this month.

According to anonymous “component players” in Asia, the Google Chrome OS, which was first rumoured back in November 2009 will start shipping pre-installed on devices in the coming weeks despite the internet giant remaining tight-lipped about any such plans.

The latest rumours of a Chrome release date further bolster claims made by Acer earlier this summer when the tech manufacturer claimed it was planning on releasing Chrome OS based devices before the end of the year. Despite later retracting these statements, Acer’s blab could soon be realised.

Whilst these claims are far from confirmed by Google, it is also believed that the search engine creators will be launching a self-branded Chrome OS device alongside the eventual unveiling of the operating system.

Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest on the arrival of Google’s Chrome OS including launch dates and prices.

Deltenna WiBE lands to give broadband to rural areas

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 01:29 AM PDT

Rural broadband has never been so talked about before

T3 had heard of Deltenna WiBE back in June 2010, when we reported it would bring 2Mbps browsing to rural areas.

A UK start-up company that manufactures wireless networking kits, it has finally finished the first production run of the WiBE - the Wireless Broadband Enabler mobile broadband booster device.

The WiBE is aimed at those households with poor or no 3G signal. According to the company, the WiBE has been tested and shown provide 3G signal which is 30 times better than a broadband dongle. This would be useful to rural areas where reception isn't that great. Testing has shown a download speed of 2.8Mbps in rural areas.

The WiBE even won the UKTI 'Best of British Mobile Technology' competition in October 2010.

To get this award-winning device, shell out around £425. Really.

Do you think it's worth spending over 400 pounds to get better broadband in low-connectivity areas? Pop over to T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and give us a shout.

PayPal's outage still affecting UK users?

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 12:47 AM PDT

UK users might still be experiencing problems with PayPal?

UPDATE: PayPal has assured us that this issue has now been fixed.

PayPal has had to apologise to its customers after a weekend outage left many struggling.

While the payment service company has said they have fixed the problem, there was a hardware failure in a data centre on Friday which caused the problem.

PayPal processed $21 billion of payments in the second quarter of this year, showing its importance in the world of online trading, especially with eBay.

Scott Guilfoyle, PayPal's chief technology officer said on their blog: "We take our commitment seriously to provide our customers a safer and more convenient way to pay and be paid online. So we understand how frustrating it is to experience any disruption in the benefits PayPal provides."

He also added that around 8:07am on Friday, a network hardware failure resulted in the service interruption for PayPal users worldwide.

According to PCPro however, UK users are still experiencing issues with PayPal, including their postage service. They've cited users who claimed to receive error messages on the web site and are suffering delays and other problems in their business.

It's not clear whether the outage over the weekend is related to any problems UK users are suffering from.

Are you a PayPal user who's having problems? Tell us about it on T3's Twitter and Facebook pages and keep following us for regular updates in the world of tech.

ICO speaks out about its position on Google Street View

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 12:14 AM PDT

No knee-jerk reaction here

The Information Commissioners Office has spoken out about its thoughts on Google's admission of having gotten private emails and passwords from its Street View cars.

The ICO spokesperson reiterated the need for them to be calm and collected while making a decision on data privacy issues.

The ICO had visited Google's premises earlier this year and had cleared Google of wi-fi snooping. At that time, the ICO did not find anything in the data that Google had inadvertently collected to suggest that a person could be identified with it. While saying that the data collected was insignificant, the ICO promised to await the findings of international privacy watchdogs and make a future assessment.

With Google's latest admission, the ICO said, "We have already made enquires to see whether this admission relates to the data inadvertently captured in the UK, and we are now deciding on the necess ary course of action, including a consideration of the need to use our enforcement powers."

They stressed that no body investigating Google Street View has taken direct enforcement action yet. In addition, the Metropolitan Police have also closed their case against Google.

The ICO spokesperson added: "We will not be panicked into a knee jerk response to an alarmist agenda."

Do you think the ICO should take direct action with regards to this investigation? What should they do? Tell us what you think on Twitter and Facebook and tune in for your regular tech updates.
