Orange launch Do Some Good charity app

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 04:54 AM PDT

Do Some Good app brings charity-on-the-go to smartphone users.

Of a charitable nature, but just can't get the time off work to knock up that school in the third world? Now, thanks to Orange, you can help make the world a better place in the space of a TV ad break, with the Do Some Good app.

With help from a slew of charities, the app lets users pick and choose from dozens of bite-sized bits of charity - whether that be taking a survey for the Samaritans, or using your phone's camera to snap photos of bits of your neighbourhood in need of a bit of a sprucing up. Best of all, all the surveys and tasks in the app are designed to take under five each, so even the most frenetic lifestyle is no excuse for not getting involved.

And for those who spend more than four hours helping folks with the app, Orange are offering up rewards from the Orange RockCorps Collective, including free gig tickets, passes for Glastonbury and VIP access to music events across the UK.

The Do Some Good app is currently only available to iPhone and iPad users, but Orange promise the altruistically-minded on other smartphone platforms will be able to get in on the charity in the near future. Apple users, meanwhile, can get a headstart on the giving by downloading the Do Some Good app (for free, natrually) from the App Store on the link below.

HTC Desire S released in UK

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 03:53 AM PDT

The follow-up to T3's 2010 Phone of the Year now available in the UK.

It's been a long, long wait since we saw the next generation of mobiles saunter onto the stage at MWC (OK, a little over a month), but HTC are making comparatively fast work of getting their new batch of handsets out to the masses, with the HTC Incredible S appearing last month, and now the HTC Desire S - currently winging its way into the pockets of UK smartphone owners via SIM-free smartphone pushers unlocked-mobiles.com.

The HTC Desire S, which is now on sale on the site for £384.98 SIM-free, runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and comes with a 1GHz processor, 768MB RAM and an 800x480 pixel 3.7-inch touchscreen (all overlayed with that super-smooth HTC Sense UI).

A spokesman for unlocked-mobiles.com told T3: "The HTC Desire S is now on sale and stock is selling fast - we had an unprecedented level of pre-orders for this new HTC - it's looking as popular as the original Desire already."

We were enamoured with the original HTC Desire, which picked up the Phone of the Year Award at the 2010 T3 Gadget Awards. Can its baby brother hold onto the crown in the face of competition from the Samsung Galaxy S2, LG Optimus 3D and Sony Xperia Play? Check out our full, hands-on HTC Desire S review for the T3 verdict.

eBay reveals massive iPad 2 pre-release sales

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 03:11 AM PDT

4000 iPad 2s escaped US shores ahead of the international launch - eBay reveals where they went.

It seems it wasn't just a handful of crafty Brits getting US iPad 2s shipped over to Blighty to skip the wait for the UK launch. While Apple has kept mum about the number of its latest tablets to ship, eBay haven't just come forward with numbers, they've drawn us a diagram, too.

The map shows what proportion of the whopping 12,000 US iPads that made their way onto eBay went where, with Russia and Canada taking joint second place for iPad 2 consumption with around 500 tablets a piece (behind the States, where skinflints bought up 8000 tablets to sell on once Apple stocks ran low).

The UK came third in the sales rankings alongside Hong Kong and Japan, importing roughly 350 US iPad 2s.

The most popular iPad 2 models sold on eBay were from different ends of the spectrum, with the 16GB WiFi model making up 30% of the sales and the 64GB 3G version racking up 23%. According to eBay, these sold for, on average, $198 and a massive $406 above retail price, respectively.

App week: GarageBand review, Tiger 12 lands early

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

By-pass FaceTime with Qik for iPhone
Fed-up with only being able to video chat using FaceTime on the iPhone? Well Qik has come to the rescue with an app that allows live video streaming onto the web and video calls to anyone with a Qik account across platforms. Could this be the start of Apple opening up video calling to apps like Skype?

Angry Birds Rio lands on the Android Market
The UK Android blackout is over and the latest Angry Birds installment has arrived on the Android Market. After a week or so of Amazon Appstore exclusivity (which is currently US-only), the ad-funded, free version of Rio is available to all UK Android owners. Warm up the catapults and take aim...

Tiger Woods 12 gets pre-console launch for iOS
EA Sports' top franchises have made a massive splash on the iPhone and iPad so it's no real surprise to see Tiger Woods 12 hit the App Store before it's available for consoles. Adding new golfers, courses and improved graphics, PGA Tour 12 also introduces new game modes with the ‘Tiger Challenge’ to see gamers complete over 20 mini-game challenges in order to earn in-game currency required to enter the tour.

Android Market gets in-app purchases
Google has gone live with its in-app purchasing functionality for Android apps, which Apple has been doing since September. Apps like TapTap Revenge 4 have already added bonus content. Naturally Google is taking a 30 per cent for all bonus content too

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

The best iPad app on the planet
GarageBand was announced with the iPad 2 on March 2nd and almost stole the show. This is quite simply the best application for the iPad yet. With virtual instruments you need no experience to play, the chance to plug in your guitar and record and lay down an eight-track song for the reasonable price of just £2.99, creating a musical masterpiece has never been easier.

TED: Learn something cool every single day
Yes, yes, we know you love Angry Birds, but you can't allow dominating piggies to take over every second of your smartphone. So next time you're on the bus to work, check out TED mobile. The app gives experts from around the world 20 minutes to explain why their chosen topic is important to the world, and we think they're worth a listen. Do that once a day and wow your mates down the pub with amazing facts. THEN, you can get back to harvesting pigs.

Feed your online gaming addiction...
Live Holdem Poker Pro is a damn good place to start if you're looking to branch out into the smartphone betting arena. There's an infinite free option, which will prevent you from losing cash, but there's a micro-payment approach which is an insurance against losing your dough to buy virtual coins. Tech Week: 3DS launch failures and Amazon's Cloud Player

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 01:00 AM PDT

Yet another busy week in tech has passed us by, here are our highlights from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
'The cloud' took centre stage this week as Amazon announced its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player. The move annoyed some of the major labels and soon Amazon was rushing back to secure licensing deals. The legal worries did nothing to stop mSpot from quickly matching Amazon's offerings in a bid to remain competitive. Meanwhile Sony, having displayed irritation at Amazon's business practices, quickly tried to inject some life into its own cloud-music service announcing that Sony Music Unlimited will be coming to the NGP, the PSP and the Xperia Play.

Nintendo's 3DS made the headlines a lot this week but not always for the right reasons. Users reported eye strain and headaches although Nintendo claimed to have not received any such complaints. Those who managed to keep their eyes glued to the 3D device may well have suffered from the 3DS' black screen of death bug anyway. Despite the controversy Ninty is claiming to have set a new US handheld sales record although its being mighty shady on those figures.

Reviews of the Week
It may not be making it to the shelves as quickly as Sony Ericsson would like, but we got our hands on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and had a go on the gaming/phone crossover device.

The HTC Desire got an upgrade recently in the HTC Desire S. The new version features a smaller size, drops the trackball and boosts the OS to Android's latest and greatest mobile release, Gingerbread. We checked it out to see if it matched up to last year's success
