Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Future mobile handsets showing up before they are supposed to is the tech industry's bi-weekly Christmas. Today we have been offered advanced peeks of both future HTC and BlackBerry devices. Whilst the HTC New Eden Concept No. 1 was a deliberate release as part of the concept phone project, the appearance of RIM's BlackBerry Bold Touch on Youtube was certainly not planned with the feature revealing videos quickly given the chop.

Now just £479.99 the Android 3.0 tablet is price competitive with the similarly specced iPad although with a considerably smaller following. Elsewhere in future news and Toshiba officially confirmed it will have mastered glasses-free 3DTV within 12 months.

Apple devices leak and we love to snap them up, today saw the next-gen Apple iPod Touch rear its head with a capacitive home button doing away the physical button and storage space being bumped to 128GB. Keeping with Apple and new reports suggest that the upcoming Apple iPhone 5 will official launch in June.

Gaming hit and miss stories round off today's News@8pm. Starting with the miss and EA is facing a billion dollar lawsuit after the developer behind the original Madden release sues over lost royalties. Toshiba Places: Internet TV service officially launches

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 09:02 AM PDT

Download movies from a TV or laptop, play games or watch iPlayer

First seen at IFA last year Toshiba has fully introduced Toshiba Places, it’s integrated IPTV solution. As well as offering the usual catch-up selection like iPlayer, it’s an open platform service that lets you share video and music between Toshiba TVs, as well tablets, smartphones and computers, crucially this includes non-Toshiba devices - via the cloud.

Toshiba Places is split into eight sections or ‘Places’, which work across different types of device including laptops and TVs, each with its own content providers, but sharing the same slick interface.

Video Places lets you access PPV movie services, including Box Office 365 and Cartoon Network to computers and TVs. Because data is held in the cloud and Toshiba Places is accessed using the same password via multiple devices, you can start watching a movie you’ve got from Box Office 365 on your laptop, then when you return home you can log in to Toshiba places to continue to watch it on you TV.

Download and stream music using Music Places to a PC via 7Digital or listen to web radio ComFM on a TV. Social Places also works across PCs and TVs, enabling users to share photos and videos using Flickr and Daily Motion. News Place and TV Place let you access news services, along with catch-up services like BBC iPlayer via your TV.

The T3 Hot 100
- See this year's hottest TV tech

Game Place is available via PC. Powered by Wildtangent it lets you download or play games online. App Place is for downloading apps and games to a PC, while Services Place is for accessing Toshiba support information. Toshiba Places will be available in all REGZA UL, SL, VL, WL and YL series TVs, the first of which is due for release in May.

Next-gen iPod Touch leaks with capacitive home button

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 09:01 AM PDT

Apple do away with physical home button in leaked iPod Touch

The next generation Apple iPod Touch is to land with a new capacitive home button and storage increased to 128GB, new leaked information has suggested.

Appearing thanks to a flurry of leaked spyshots the claimed iPod Touch revamp can be seen to have done away with the physical home button, a feature previously rumoured for Apple’s next iPhone handset, instead opting for a capacitive touch option.

Seemingly confirming previous speculation and patent filings the inclusion of a capacitive home button on future iPod Touch and even iPhone devices could see Apple introduce a feast of new gesture controls to the devices’ below screen bezel.

Joining the leaked Touch’s nifty bag of tricks the device’s ‘About’ screen clearly displays its 128GB capacity, doubling the current top end storage options of the latest range of iPod Touch devices that top out at just 64GB.

Will we really see Apple dropping the physical home button for the next-gen iPod Touch and iPhone? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Toshiba: Glasses free 3D TV within 12 months

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Stunning sets with 3D, but no glasses free - yet

At the Toshiba World conference in Rome, the Japanese electronics giant has announced its new REGZA TV range, including the flagship Regza WL and YL 3D Pro-LED TV series. Both include cutting-edge CEVO tech and enhanced web capabilities via Toshiba Places.

Although both have been designed in collaberation with Jacob Jensen Design, the YL series includes the floating design, where the TV appears to float over a soundbar underneath.

At the heart of the TVs is the new CEVO engine, which includes 7-cores and is the fastest engine in the TV market at 9.6Gbps, for enhanced picture quality.  When asked why the new range didn’t include Cell TV, Toshiba said there was no way it could be integrated partly because it creates too much heat.

There was no sign of glasses-free 3D, but a Toshiba spokesman confirmed: ‘Within the next 12 months, we’ll get 3D without glasses.’ The company also confirmed the set will be plus 40-inches

Instead CEVO engine enables the WL and YL series to display full 3D TV and upscales 2D to 3D in real time.

The YL and WL Series incorporate a PRO-LED panel. This full 1080p HD panel incorporates a combination of back and edge lit local dimming technology. This basically means the lights are behind the TV over zones, each adjusting individually to suit the picture, improving picture quality with consistent brightness and vivid colours.

All the TVs include the new Personal Mode, which lets you store settings including: volume controls, channels, picture settings and recorded content, for four different users. Even cleverer the TVs incorporate face-recognition technology, an on-board camera that detects who is in front of the TV and swaps the settings automatically. We’re not really sure face-detection technology needs to be on a TV - a technology normally used to bring people together, but it will be interesting to see how it works.

All the sets have Freeview HD, WiFi, DLNA and Windows 7 compatibility. Connectivity includes 4x HDMIs and USB HDD recording, for recording content directly to a portable hard drive like a PVR.

Instead of calibrating via PC. WL and YL series include the World’s first automated TV calibration system, which lets you calibrate your own TV using a probe via USB,

The WL and YL Series will be available in 42in, 46in and 55inch panel sizes, there's no news on pricing yet, but find out more from www.toshiba.co.uk.

Harry Potter eBooks put on hold by JK Rowling

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 08:15 AM PDT

Potter eBooks still some way off

The phenomenally popular series of Harry Potter novels will not hit eBook readers in the near future as author JK Rowling continues to stall plans of digitally converting the boy wizard tales.

Refuting recent claims in a number of Scottish newspapers that have suggested Rowling is on the brink of unleashing the Potter franchise in a digital book form, the authors agent, Neil Blair at the Christopher Little Agency, has stated there is “nothing more to say” on the matter.

Despite Blair last year confirming to industry publication the Bookseller that Rowling was actively considering Harry Potter eBooks, the seven strong series which gripped an entire generation of readers and has sparked a series of movies that will culminate this July with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow Part 2, such releases have yet failed to materialise.

Speaking on the prospect of Harry Potter eBooks Waterstone’s spokesperson Jon Howells told The Guardian such a release would be a “massive story.”

Howells added: "They are the biggest book property of recent decades, with a legion of fans who have read them a dozen times and want to read them again in the way they want.” He concluded: “Seven guaranteed top-selling eBooks just waiting to happen".

Does certain content availability dictate your gadget buying habits, would Harry Potter or other any other book tempt you into buying an eBook reader? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Motorola Xoom price dropped just days ahead of UK launch

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 07:22 AM PDT

Xoom price drop hints towards low pre-orders

Retailer PC World has dropped the price of the Motorola Xoom just days ahead of the Android tablet’s official UK release.

With the retailer’s online outlet having offered pre-orders of the Motorola Xoom for some weeks now ahead of a “release in the 1st week of April (date TBC),” PC World has today dropped the price of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet suggesting pre-release orders have been lower than expected.

Although that TBC release date is still awaiting confirmation, with a delivery date on the site’s shop predicting a April 9th doorstep arrival, PC World has lowered the Xoom’s pre-order price from the original £499.99 to £479.99 for the standard 32GB Wi-Fi only model.

Whilst this new lower price brings the 10.1-inch, dual-core, 1GB of RAM touting Xoom almost in line with the 32GB Wi-Fi only iPad 2, still 99 pence more expensive, the pre-release price drops suggests the arrival of the second-generation Apple tablet has severely hampered the arrival of the first Android Honeycomb device.

Can the Xoom’s new price point help it challenge the iPad atop the tablet market? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Beloved 8-bit gaming machine is coming back with a modern twist

First images of an early prototype of new Commodore 64 have surfaced giving us a glimpse of what we can expect from its nostalgic return.

- New Commodore 64 pictures

Sporting the iconic C64 body, the new machine will carry the same name and feature a similar all-in-keyboard, but will also be packing a dual-core Intel Atom 525 and an NVIDIA Ion 2 chipset.

Set to run similarly to a Windows PC, you'll also be able to indulge in some retro gaming nostalgia with direct access to a C64 emulator.

Other notable specs include 2GB of memory which can be expanded to 4GB, PureVideo Full 1080p HD video and Blu-ray playback, 6 Channel High Definition Audio, four USB ports, and support for HDMI, DVI VGA and Ethernet.

The original Commodore 64, a computer gaming first for many back in the 1980s, sold 17 million units between 1982 and 1994.

Commodore USA, the company behind the C64 resurrection, has yet to reveal when it will go on sale or how much it will cost, but we will keep you posted as soon as we know more.

EA faces billion dollar lawsuit from Madden creator

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 06:19 AM PDT

Popular gaming franchise faces massive legal action

Global game developer EA is being sued for tens of millions of dollars by the man who created the basis for the first Madden NFL American Football title, reports have revealed.

With EA’s Madden franchise going on to gross billions of dollars globally and becoming one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world selling more than 85 million copies along the way, Robin Antonick, who claims he created the pigskin-hurling series, is to take EA to court in an attempt to claim lost royalties and revenues.

Having signed a development contract with EA way back in 1986 that entitled him to royalties on derivative versions of the original Madden release, a title which launched for the Commodore 64, MS Dos and Apple II shortly after, Antonick is now pursuing a jury trial in California.

In pushing for such a lawsuit the former developer’s lawyers have stated: "Only recently, as a result of publicity surrounding the 20th Anniversary of the 'Madden' videogame did Antonick become aware that Electronic Arts did not independently develop subsequent versions of its Madden NFL software.”

They added: “According to recent statements by Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, the current generation of software apparently derived from software developed by Antonick."

Taking on action on the fact that Antonick has not received any such royalties from EA since 1992, his lawyers concluded: "Electronic Arts decided that it did not want to share profits with him even though he was responsible for the development of virtually all of the ground-breaking technology at the heart of the game."

With Madden 12 set to touch down later this summer ahead of the new football season, EA will be looking to resolve all legal issues surrounding the popular gaming franchise.

BlackBerry Bold Touch leaks in YouTube tutorial video

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 04:37 AM PDT

Pinch to zoom to land on upcoming BlackBerry handsets

Leaked video tutorials for upcoming BlackBerry handsets have appeared in YouTube, outing a range of yet to be announced touchscreen devices.

Having originally leaked late last week the BlackBerry Bold Touch, reportedly going by the codename the BlackBerry Monaco or Monza, strangely both top class European race tracks, the new videos, which were quickly pulled from the video sharing site but have since landed elsewhere on the web, offer a tantalising look at what RIM has in store for future handsets.

Sticking with the tried and tested form factor of the hugely successful BlackBerry Bold, RIM is to retain the massively popular full QWERTY keyboard found on the device whilst adding a capacitive touchscreen that will bring multi point gesture controls to a BlackBerry handset.

Taking hints and tips from the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook, a tablet device that will utilise a full array of gesture controls, the upcoming Bold Touch will, judging by the leaked video content, allow users to make use of features such as pinch to zoom and a fluid muti-directional scrolling UI.

Would you like to see a well worked BlackBerry touchscreen device or do you believe it would do away from the brands base specialities? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. Confirmed release dates or prices for the leaked Touch handsets are currently unknown.

HTC New Eden concept phone offers peek of the future

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 03:35 AM PDT

Concept phone gives hints to the future of handset design

HTC has officially revealed the future of phone design with the unveiling of a concept handset displayed as part of the New Eden Project.

Dubbed the HTC New Eden Concept No. 1 the concept design from the maker of the hugely popular Desire and Wildfire handsets was unveiled as part of the BriefMovile project that is looking to gain an insight into the future of feasible, appealing and usable handset design.

Crafted with a durable aluminum shell, much like numerous existing HTC handsets, the New Eden Concept No. 1 sports a sleek, svelte design that, judging by the icon buttons residing underneath the handset’s display, would, if put to production, run Google’s Android operating system.

Whilst we don’t expect to see the HTC New Eden Concept No. 1 turned into a reality anytime soon, the Taiwanese phone manufacturer is holding a press event in London next week where the mooted HTC Pyramid is expected to land as the company’s first dual-core smartphone.

Does the New Eden Concept No. 1 replicate the future handsets that you envisaged? Let us know your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony BDV-EF200, BDV-L600 and BDP-S780 Blu-ray systems outed

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 03:02 AM PDT

Two new home cinema systems and 3D upconverting Blu-ray player unveiled.

Sony has just pulled the wrappers off of three new Blu-ray systems. The BDV-EF200 and BDV-L600 are complete Blu-ray 2.1 home cinema packages, while the new BDP-S780 Blu-ray player can upscale your bog-standard 2D pics into glorious 3D.

The BDV-EF200 and BDV-L600 both pack in Sony’s Bravia Internet Video software, so you can access the likes of YouTube and BBC iPlayer direct. There’s also the chance to tap into and rent films from Lovefilm, as well as get the latest headlines via Sky News’s dedicated TV app.

Both packages come with Sony’s S-Force 3D virtual surround sound tech, as well as two HDMI ports and even an iPod dock for checking out tunes and clips stashed on your Apple jukebox. The BDV-L600 can be wall-mounted or stood vertically too.

If you’re not after a full-on home cinema system, then the BDP-S780 is an ace compromise. It comes with 3D up-conversion skills, Skype access and Wi-Fi, not to mention noise reduction tech to ensure low quality web video is upscaled and looks the part.

There’s no word yet on price or release date, so keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.

Fujifilm Finepix Z900 EXR unveiled

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 02:14 AM PDT

16 megapixels and stunning 3.5-inch touchscreen make this a must-have.

Fujifilm has just come over all official with its new Finepix Z900 EXR compact camera. The new snapper packs in a whacking 16 megapixel sensor, along with a 3.5-inch touchscreen round the back and even 1080p video recording smarts.

Fujifilm reckons the CMOS sensor, which packs in back side illumination, will improve sensitivity so you can take super sharp snaps no matter the light. And low light shouldn’t be a problem for the Finepix Z900 EXR thanks to a hefty ISO of 6,400.

There’s a 3fps continuous shooting mode so you don’t miss a thing, 5x optical zoom, while the Full HD video feature records in H.264, taking up less space on your memory card than an AVI file. Plus you can slap your home movies straight onto your telly thanks to a HDMI port.

At 18.2mm, it’s also just about slim enough to slip into your pocket and comes in black, red, pink and blue hues. There’s no word on price just yet, so stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.

iPhone 5 release date: new rumour says phone will be out in June

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 01:16 AM PDT

Korean report claims next-gen iPhone will be released in summer.

The iPhone 5’s release date has been pushed back until September, right? Well, not according to Korean site ETnews. See, it reckons the next-gen Apple cell will actually be out in June, contradicting a string of recent reports that said the device would take a bow in September.

Rather than being revealed at Apple’s WWDC bash at the start of the month, ETnews says Apple will hold a special event in the last week of June, with Steve Jobs himself taking to the stage to reveal the blower.

ETnews says Apple itself has confirmed the plans for a summer unveiling, which seems highly unlikely. With stacks of other reports to the contrary, from multiple trustworthy news sources, it appears this tidbit might just be too outlandish to believe.

Xbox 360 app store launching next week?

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 11:56 PM PDT

Big M expected to detail Silverlight for Xbox 360 plans at Las Vegas event next week.

Microsoft could unveil a new Xbox 360 app store as soon as next week. That’s according to an anonymous source, who says the new emporium could be revealed alongside the Big M’s plans for bringing its Silverlight platform to the games console.

Silverlight, a framework for developing apps, has been mooted for an Xbox 360 debut for months. Microsoft will outline its plans at the MIX11 event in Las Vegas next week. Word is that devs would be able to use Silverlight to help them bring versions of their Windows Phone 7 apps to the Xbox 360.

Such a move would help Microsoft keep the pressure up on Sony and Nintendo, as well as give it a jump on major TV manufacturers’ attempts to corner the TV app space with web-connected Smart TVs.

The Xbox 360 and WP7 already play nice over Xbox Live, so using Silverlight to bring their app stores closer together makes sense. Is it a move you’d welcome? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

PSN and PlayStation websites hit by hackers

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 11:39 PM PDT

Sony websites and PlayStation network both downed as Sony plays PR game.

PSN and Sony’s PlayStation websites have been hit by hackers collective Anonymous, following a threat to take down the Big S’s online services. The group says it is reacting to the alleged treatment of the hacker Geohot, who first worked out how to jailbreak the PS3 and Graf_Chokolo, another hacker being pursued by Sony.

In an open letter, Anonymous said, “You have now received the undivided attention of Anonymous. Your recent legal action against our fellow hackers, Geohot and Graf_Chokolo has not only alarmed us, it has been deemed wholly unforgivable."

Anonymous, which last year took down Amazon and Mastercard as part of its campaign to support the Wikileaks whistle-blowing website, managed to bring down Sony’s online presences in Europe and the US yesterday.

Sony said any outage on PSN was down to, “…sporadic maintenance,” according to the official AskPlayStation Twitter feed. Anonymous’s recent history suggests it will not let Sony off with just this single attack.

Create your own version of the Bowie classic with new app.

Pop legend David Bowie will launch an iPhone application that will let fans create their own remixes from his forthcoming "Golden Years" EP.

The Life on Mars singer will launch a collection of newly re-mixed versions of the 1975 track, on June 6th, with new interpretations from Anthony Valadez, Eric J. Lawrence, Chris Douridas and Jeremy Sole.

But the accompanying iPhone app is the real news for us tech fans. It will include the original multi-tracks, which will allow Bowie fans to create their own versions of the songs, export them as an mp3 file and share with friends.

With the new GarageBand for iPad among the best apps ever to hit the App News, are we entering a new era of music creation using smartphone apps?
