News@8pm: iPhone laptop dock and Sony tablet incoming

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

New Apple patents often give us a sneak peak into the future of the Cupertino tech giant and today has presented us with a bumper offering. First up on the advanced look front was a patent that revealed Apple is working on iWeb for the iPad, bringing the website creator from Macs to the tablet much like Page, iMovie and PhotoBooth. Following this another patent revealed Apple's latest 'App Store' trademarks hinting towards the imminent introduction of NFC style payment tech in the upcoming Apple iPhone 5.

Staying with Apple and the iPhone 5 and we came across an interesting bit of news today claiming Apple is working on a laptop dock for the imminent iPhone 5 arrival. This Atrix styled surprise was matched by the revelation that tech giant Sony is finally looking to venture into the tablet market with the first Sony tablet, rumoured to be called the Sony S1, officially heading for a summer release.

Nintendo 3DS gaming has taken off since the console launched in the UK, Europe and the US last month. As if proving this we have two 3DS themed stories for you kicking off with the news Ninty sold 113,000 of the pocketable 3D consoles in the UK in the opening 48 hours. This is followed by the revelation that FIFA 12 will land on the Nintendo 3DS, as well as the Sony NGP when it officially launches later in the year.

Other random news with no discernable link but a definite amount of intrigue and importance is the report that Angry Birds Rio has received more than 10 million downloads in its opening 10 days with the app sensation once again breaking records and hitting milestones. Elsewhere Google's co-founder Larry page has taken over the role as the company's CEO replacing Eric Schmidt who held the position for ten years.

Larry Page takes the helm as Google CEO

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 08:41 AM PDT

Page in as Schmidt ends 10 year run as Google leader

Google co-founder Larry Page will today take over the reigns of the company as he replaces Eric Schmidt as CEO of the internet and software behemoth.

Having revealed the plans back in January Page will today take over the day-to-day running of the company he co-founded back in 1998, ending the ten year reign of now former CEO Eric Schmidt, who will now adopt the roll of Executive Chairman.

Founding Google alongside Sergey Brin, the two search engine revolutionaries instated Schmidt as CEO of the web giant back in 2001 to add an air of maturity and a more experienced business mind to the operation.

Discussing the move to instate Page as CEO via an official blog earlier this year Schmidt declared: "For the last 10 years, we have all been equally involved in making decisions.” He added: "This triumvirate approach has real benefits in terms of shared wisdom, and we will continue to discuss the big decisions among the three of us. But we have also agreed to clarify our individual roles so there's clear responsibility and accountability at the top of the company."

As Page gets comfortable in his new role, Schmidt’s position as Executive Chairman will see him advising both Page and Brin on the running of the company and helping to arrange "deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership."

Will end users of Google’s vast array of products and services notice a difference in the months following Page’s adoption of the CEO role? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

BlackBerry PlayBook to get app injection from Polar

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 08:38 AM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook looking like a more viable contender every day.

When the BlackBerry PlayBook was announced earlier this year, we all asked the question: Well, what about the apps? Since that time RIM has done a pretty good job of answering it.

After already securing access to the Android Market, the PlayBook now has app developer Polar Mobile, which specialises in media, newspaper and magazine style apps, committing to furnishing the tablet with 100+ apps in this calendar year.

Polar has been prolific in creating apps for iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile and has endorsed the PlayBook as an on-the-go device rather than a tablet like the iPad that folks will primarily use at home.

"What we like about RIM is access to BBM, their IM client, and the ability to use push technology and notifications," says chief exec Kunal Gupta.

"What we like about the PlayBook is the form factor, in that we expect consumers to use it on the go, whereas the iPad can be seen as an evening and weekend device. That means consumers may look at their PlayBook five to six times during the day, and will want content available easily and quickly through apps."

So the PlayBook continues to stake its claim as a viable alternative to the iPad and the few Honeycomb tablets already on the market. We're excited to see what comes of Polar's vow.

Apple's new App Store patents reveal upcoming NFC plans

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Apple adds to 'App Store' trademark coverage

Amid numerous legal battles over the simple but globally recognisable term Apple has expanded European patent filings for its trademark of the phrase ‘App Store’.

Confirmed by the European Trademark office publishing two of the company’s latest trademark filings, the patent expanding applications have increased Apple’s cover of the App Store to 10 internationally recognised categories, revealing the company’s plans to introduce NFC payments to upcoming iDevices in the process.

As well as now covering games for Apple’s Game Center and books for the iBooks Store, Apple’s latest filings feature trademarks for App based financial transactions including credit card transactions and electronic cash payments.

These plans seemingly confirm the recent spate of rumours that have suggested the upcoming Apple iPhone 5, expected to be officially unveiled at WWDC 2011 on June 6th, will launch touting the NFC tech specs that would allow for the adoption of contact-less payments via the smartphone device.

Will NFC take off and be adopted by the masses or is it a passing trend destined for failure? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

FIFA 12 to land for 3DS and Sony NGP from launch

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 07:18 AM PDT

EA to go on the move with FIFA 12 for the 3DS and NGP

The 2012 edition of EA’s much applauded FIFA gaming franchise is to touch down on both the Nintendo 3DS and Sony’s upcoming NGP portable games console, one of the title’s engineers has revealed.

Spilling the beans via his official Linkedin profile EA software engineer José Galera Pérez declared in the experience section of his online CV that his current project revolves around "FIFA12 (X360, PS3, PS2, PSP, PSP2, PC, Wii, NDS, N3DS), European and Asian SKU."

Although widely expected that EA would take FIFA to the 3DS in retort to the console’s Pro Evo branded launch title, confirmation of a release for Sony’s NGP, a console that is not due to land until the late stages of the year, marks FIFA 12 out as a likely candidate to be a launch title for the PlayStation branded console.

Whilst EA is currently keeping the upcoming revamp to its market leading football simulator tightly under wraps, the globally renowed games developer confirmed earlier this year that AI and set-pieces were just two areas of the FIFA franchise it is looking to upgrade. Although not mentioned in Pérez's list of compatible consoles, it is widely expected that FIFA 12 will also land for the iPhone and iPad, expanding its portable credentials and fitting with its dual iOS release last year.

Sony tablet UK release set for summer with Android 3.0

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 06:39 AM PDT

Sony to adopt Google Honeycomb for first tablet effort

Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has revealed the tech giant is to officially launch its first tablet device later this summer in an attempt to rival Apple’s market dominating iPad.

According to the Japanese newspaper, Nikkei, Stringer is reported to have revealed that Sony, a company which has yet to venture into the tablet market whilst its main competitors Samsung and LG jump in, will release its first iPad challenger this summer with the upcoming device set to run Google’s tablet-centric Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system.

Although little is currently known about the mooted Sony tablet, recent reported design leaks suggested the Sony device would forgo the typical look adopted by the iPad and its numerous challengers, instead opting for a curved form factor making the tablet appear to host an in-built stand feature and rolled newspaper aesthetic.

Reportedly being prepared for launch with the moniker the Sony S1, Stringer failed to comment on an official name or specs list for the upcoming device. With music streaming in the form of Music Unlimited and gaming from the PlayStation Suite at Sony’s disposal, any upcoming tablet launches should not be short of high-end fillers.

Apple patent reveals iWeb for iPad application plans

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 04:57 AM PDT

Apple to expand Mac to iPad app range

Recently filed patent applications have revealed that Apple is planning on bringing its Mac-based web designer iWeb to the iPad.

Having already transformed a variety of Mac software into hugely popular and successful iPad applications, the new patent filing shows the Cupertino tech giant is working on a version of iWeb for the iPad that will be “designed to work with gestures.”

In making it to Apple’s App Store iWeb would join the likes of Garageband, Photo Booth, Pages and iMovie all of which have previously made the jump from Apple’s Mac devices to its market leading range of tablets, the iPad and recently launched iPad 2.

Allowing users to craft custom web pages direct from their iPads it is currently unknown if and when the tablet-bound iWeb app will land with a confirmed launch date for the web customising application yet to be announced.

What other Mac software would you like to see make the jump to the iPad? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

iPhone 5 laptop dock incoming?

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 03:11 AM PDT

Insider claims Apple is planning to take on Motorola.

The Apple rumour mill certainly enjoys the odd curveball. And none are more odd than the latest morsel surrounding the forthcoming iPhone 5.

The next-gen phone is apparently getting a dedicated laptop dock, with Apple looking to take on the sleek Motorola Atrix at its own game. The Motorola Atrix has been receiving considerable attention, even topping T3's own Hot 100 best gadgets list.

According to some of ITProPortal’s “intelligence”, the laptop dock will let users slip the iPhone into a slot where a trackpad would normally sit. The iPhone would then be used as a mouse, with the dock running the cell’s iOS software and using its web connection.

The insider even reckons this new iPhone laptop dock will have a Retina Display. Apparently, the iPhone 4 will not play nice, but the next generation iPod touch and the iPhone 5 will.

While an iPhone laptop dock might seem extreme, the idea isn’t as far fetched as it sounds. The Motorola Atrix has proved that a phone can be used as a central computing hub, although surely such an effort from Apple would compromise the iPad.

Bunkum or brilliant? Tell us what you think of the iPhone laptop dock over on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Acer Iconia Tab A100: 7-inch Honeycomb tablet for £300?

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 03:06 AM PDT

Amazon leaks details on the smartly-priced tab

If there’s one major criticism being levelled at Android Honeycomb tablets, it’s that they’re not being priced reasonably enough to lure people away from the iPad. Acer’s obviously taken note of this, as its upcoming 7-inch Iconia Tab A100 will weigh in at an iPad-undercutting £300.

Obviously, at only 7-inches you’d expect a lower price point than the 10-inch posse, but the A100 doesn’t scrimp on the specs. It boasts the same Tegra 2 dual-core processor as its Android brethren, 512Mb of RAM (not the 512kb Amazon has in the listing) and Android Honeycomb. Its miniscule 8GB hard drive seems to be the only down side here.

Amazon has the Iconia A100 priced at £300, with a UK release set for April 20th. Are you keen for some budget Honeycomb action? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Angry Birds Rio hits 10m downloads in opening 10 days

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 02:48 AM PDT

Angry Birds bandwagon keeps on rolling

App sensation Angry Birds has totted up yet another impressive milestone with the franchise’s latest release, Angry Birds Rio, recording more than 10 million downloads in its opening 10 days.

The avian flinging mobile game was given a makeover late last month to tie-in with the upcoming movie release of Rio. Since then developer Rovio has revealed the most successful mobile application franchise of all time has seen the Rio release downloaded in excess of 10 million times.

Announcing the news via its official Twitter feed, the Finnish developer, Rovio Mobile, declared: “10 in 10:-) Angry Birds Rio breaking all records. A massive thanks to all our fans!!!!”

Originally made available exclusively on Apple’s iOS-running iPhone and iPad devices as well as a free Android download through the launch of the Amazon Appstore, Angry Birds Rio last week touched down on the Android Market bringing the Rio de Janeiro-based mobile fun to Google powered handsets free of charge.

Are you one of the 10 million people to have downloaded Angry Birds Rio already? Let us know what you think of the game via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Windows 8 screenshots reveal ribbon interface

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 02:28 AM PDT

New Windows interface to be inspired by Office?

The first images from the preview build of Windows 8 have emerged which point to a ribbon user interface for the next instalment of the OS.

 - Windows 8 screenshots

Swapping a drop-down menu system for the more screen-dominating UI style previously used with Microsoft Office, it has previously divided opinion amongst the Microsoft fan masses.

These latest snaps follow closely on from leaked images of the Windows 8 login screen and Windows 8 taskbar spotted in the past few weeks.

We should also take into consideration that this is a beta version of the new OS, so there is still every chance it may get booted out before an official launch.

Samsung and Visa plotting NFC Olympic phone

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 02:13 AM PDT

Two sponsors joining forces to bring NFC phone to next year's games.

Samsung and Visa are working on a NFC-packing Olympics phone, which will be handed out to athletes competing in next year’s London games. And what’s more, regular punters will be able to get in on the act too.

The phone will be released as part of a wider tie-up between the two companies, as they look to make contactless payments more popular. The Samsung-made phone will pack a Visa-backed SIM card, letting you wave the phone at any NFC reader to pay for food or assorted Olympic tat. All you need to do to activate the service is dive into the on-board Visa app.

NFC is becoming increasingly popular, with Google baking support for the tech into Android Gingerbread. Apple is reportedly working on bringing NFC to its next-gen iPhone as well.

Will you buy Samsung’s Olympic phone? Or are you unconvinced by NFC? Tell us your thoughts now over on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Google: Honeycomb was rushed

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 01:12 AM PDT

Andy Rubin says "trade offs" were made in order to get Honeycomb out on time.

Google has admitted that it had to rush the release of Android 3.0 Honeycomb in order to help its partners compete in their burgeoning tablet war with Apple. In an interview with Bloomberg, Android chief Andy Rubin said “design trade offs” had been made in order to help Motorola release the Xoom tablet in February.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Honeycomb: 10 things to do straight away

Source: T3 Tech Videos
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rubin was defending Google’s decision not to release the source code for Honeycomb to anyone who wants it, as it has done with previous versions. He said that the reason was simply that Honeycomb does not work on phones and that it doesn’t want mobile makers to try.

"We didn't want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones,” he said. “It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut.”

Admitting that he had, “…no idea if [Honeycomb] will even work on phones,” Rubin was adamant that Google is not moving away from Android’s open source ideals. It seems Honeycomb’s early release and locked down nature are simply a byproduct of trying to get a toehold in the nascent tablet market without the worries of fragmentation, which have dogged Google’s OS over the past 18 months.

Nintendo 3DS UK launch: 113,000 sold

Posted: 03 Apr 2011 11:52 PM PDT

Ninty releases its own figures after chatter about console's sluggish start.

The Nintendo 3DS sold 113,000 units in its first 48 hours on UK shelves, accounting for over a third of the 303,000 sold in Europe. That’s according to Nintendo itself, which has released its own numbers instead of those from Chart Track, which independently counts sales.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nintendo 3DS video

Source: T3 Tech Videos
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

While the numbers might not seem epic, they do make the Nintendo 3DS the fastest-selling of all of the gaming giant’s handhelds. The DS managed 87,000 over the same timeframe, while the DSi shifted 92,000.

Nintendo had said that 140,000 3DS’s had been pre-ordered here in Blighty. Its target of shifting 4 million of the three dimensional consoles by the end of March is now looking highly unlikely, with just 800,000 sold in Japan and no official US numbers released.

What’s more, Chart Track has said it does not know why Nintendo has broken with convention and put out its own figures, rather than going with the independently verified official data. It seems that despite critical success, the 3DS is taking its own time becoming a commercial one.

Have you bought a Nintendo 3DS? Is it as good as you’d hoped? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Next-gen Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro: new pics

Posted: 03 Apr 2011 11:33 PM PDT

Gingerbread heading to pared-down slider.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 Mini Pro was a bit of a hit at MWC in 2010. So much so that the mobile maker is working on a successor, which has just posed for a string of spy shots over in China.

The updated blower keeps much of the original design, with a small touchscreen and slideout QWERTY keyboard for hammering out texts and emails. What’s more, it’s set to come with Android Gingerbread, proving once again that SE has learned from its previous mistake of outing phones with old-school versions of Google’s OS on board.

Sadly, there are no more specs, but you can expect to see the rumour mill spit out more juicy info in the coming weeks or months. Doubtless this isn’t the last we’ve heard of this next-gen X10 Mini Pro.
