News@8pm: iPhone 5 gets smart bezel and Xoom woes

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple patents ignite excitement over future products from the Cupertino-based behemoth and today saw a beaut of a patent tease as a leaked Apple patent hints towards a smart bezel on the iPhone 5. Porting on-screen buttons to the device's bezel, if implemented the feature could transform the desirable smartphone. Elsewhere on the Apple patent front and Apple has won a $625 million patent battle following a review that found in favour of the fruity tech giant, putting an end to what would have been a hefty fine.

Samsung's Galaxy smartphones have been making headlines as both the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II top digital news stands. First off and the Galaxy S is to get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update within a matter of weeks. This news was followed by the revelation that the upcoming Galaxy S II has scrapped its announced 1GHz dual-core processor in favour of a 1.2GHz dual-core offering.

Motorola's Xoom woes continue as reports circulate of poor sales and the Android tablet is on the receiving end of yet another price drop prior to its official UK arrival. On the poor sales front and industry analyst has claim just 100,000 Xoom tablets have been sold since it hit the US back in February. On to the price cuts and retailer Carphone Warehouse has knocked £20 off the Xoom making the 32GB Wi-Fi + 3G model now just £580 on pre-order.

Broader tablet news has seen ups for Apple and downs for BlackBerry. On the upside Apple has sold more than 2.6 million iPad 2 tablets in the weeks since its launch. On the downside however, due to the huge demand for the iPad 2 BlackBerry has had to delay the release of the PlayBook as Apple snap up all the displays.

Atari's Greatest Hits app lands on iPad and iPhone

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 08:54 AM PDT

Another app to breathe new life into an old medium

Atari has granted the dreams of millions of retro gaming fans by launching its 100 greatest titles for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

The Atari's Greatest Hits app is free to download and comes packing a copy of Pong with the other 99 available to buy as in-app purchases. Most of the games are from the cherished Atari 2600 machine, with 18 from the arcades also up for grabs.

You can buy the entire library of 100 games, including such gaming luminaries as Asteroids, Centipede and Battlezone, for a mere $14.99 (less than a tenner) or chose 25 packs of four for just 99c each.

The app even features Bluetooth connectivity so you can play head-to-head on games like Warlord and Pong and each game features the original cabinet and cover art. The app is also optimised for the iPad so there's no need to mess about scaling up the app to fit the screen of your tablet.

If you're worried about how the games will translate using the touchscreen of your iPad then we'd recommend this little stroke of genius which is approved by Atari.

We love how new tech can make old tech new again. Hopefully Atari's attempts to breathe new life into it's massive library of beloved title can inspire the makers of this dead tech to do the same.

Apple iPhone 5 to incorporate smart bezel after patent leak?

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 08:44 AM PDT

iPhone and iPad to incorporate patented smart bezel tech

Apple’s eagerly awaited iPhone 5 could incorporate a host of new gesture controls as details of a patent for an iPhone smart bezel are released.

Looking to fully utilise the space surrounding the screen of future iPhone and iPad devices, Apple’s latest patent has outed how ‘side indicators’, a combination of visual indicators and touch-sensitive buttons, could be used to present users with a variety of new control options.

Filed back in 2009, the patent, which highlights how a number of on-screen buttons and commands could be ported to touch buttons on the bezel that would be illuminated when available for use and invisible when not, offers a tantalising look at the company’s plans for upcoming iPhone handsets.

As well as adding additional touch controls to the front bezel of the market leading pocket blower, upcoming iPhone models could, according to the latest patent unveiling host new touch panels on the rear shell allowing users to manipulate menus and on-screen displays from all manner of areas.

Not the first time an Apple patent has leaked featuring information about smart bezel technologies, the latest release offers the most optimistic look yet at the feature’s inclusion on the eagerly awaited iPhone 5, a device tipped to be officially unveiled at this year’s WWDC event set to take place the week commencing June 6th.

Will the iPhone 5 or iPad 3 feature new smart bezel technologies or are such features still a distant pipedream? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iOS 4.3.2 to launch within two weeks

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 07:25 AM PDT

Bug fix and security patch expected in iOS 4.3.2

Following hot on the heels of the latest software update, Apple is to launch iOS version 4.3.2 within the next two weeks, new reports suggest.

With claimed insider sources at Apple confirming the existence and imminent release of iOS 4.3.2 the operating system update is expected to touch down by the end of the month in order to address a number of bugs and security flaws within the current offering.

Whilst it remains unclear exactly what bugs and security issues the mooted iOS release will attend, many iPhone users will no doubt be hoping for a correction to the device’s alarm bug that reared its head once again recently when British clocks moved to BST causing preset alarms to fail to activate.

Apple’s hugely popular range of portable devices run the company’s propriety iOS operating system with the full array of iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch products set to benefit from any upcoming patch.

Further details as to what, if any, new features the software update will bring are still shady. Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest news on the predicted iOS 4.3.2 release.

Samsung Galaxy S II upgraded to 1.2GHz dual-core processor

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 06:59 AM PDT

Galaxy S II boosted to 1.2GHz

Samsung’s upcoming dual-core smartphone the Samsung Galaxy S II is to add an extra punch with its 1GHz dual-core processor making the jump to a zippy 1.2GHz model.

Announced via the company’s Estonian Facebook page, the Samsung Galaxy S II’s reported new processor would see the device, tipped for a UK release later this month, landing as the highest specced handset on the market, trumping the current fleet of dual-core blowers.

Roughly translated by gadget blog Tech Radar, the Estonia arm of Samsung confirmed the bumped up spec via its official Facebook page stating something along the lines of: "Super news! S II processor, the 1.2GHz Galaxy (1.0GHz instead of the previously mentioned). It is Samsung S Galaxy II, the fastest dual-core smartphone Gingerbread painting!"

If accurate the unusual move of increasing a handset’s specifications midway through a launch campaign could be seen as Samsung trying to head off the repeatedly leaked and reported HTC Pyramid which is believed to be headed for an official unveiling next week sporting a 1.2GHz dual-core processor of its own.

Adding strength to the hazy translations GSM Arena has claimed “an internal source” has confirmed that the “Galaxy S II CPU has indeed been updated to 1.2GHz.” Samsung UK is yet to officially comment on the matter.

Will we see the Galaxy S II landing with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor or will that milestone be left to the HTC pyramid? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple wins $625 million patent infringement case

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 05:11 AM PDT

Apple get out of $625 million patent fine

A court verdict that would have seen Apple paying out $625 million (£383 million) for alleged patent infringements has been over ruled by a judge in the US.

Judge Leonard Davis overturned the decision, made by a Texan jury in October last year, that suggested Apple’s Spotlight, Time Machine and Cover Flow systems unlawfully encroached on patents held by the small tech firm Mirror Worlds, stating the claimant had failed to fully make their case against the Cupertino-based behemoth.

With Apple appealing against the verdict and challenging the validity of Mirror Worlds’ patents the $206.5 million in damages that were originally awarded to the tech firm owned by a computer-science Professor at Yale University, David Gelernter, have been thrown out.

Reviewing what was one of the biggest fines ever placed on a patent infringement case, Judge Davis, deciding that Mirror Worlds had failed to supply sufficient evidence to support its infringement and loss of revenue claims, said: "Mirror Worlds may have painted an appealing picture for the jury but it failed to lay a solid foundation sufficient to support important elements it was required to establish under the law."

Which of the three contentious Apple features, Spotlight, Time Machine or Cover Flow, do you believe adds the most to Apple’s products? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google to spend $100m on YouTube original content

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 04:18 AM PDT

Professional content to hit new YouTube channels

YouTube is to undergo a major overhaul with the online video sharing site to add 20 top-centric channels that will feature professionally-produced original content.

With Google reportedly preparing to pump $100 million into the YouTube revamp, the Wall Street Journal suggests the site responsible for global sensations such as ‘Charlie bit my finger’ and the sneezing panda will commission low cost professional content to bridge the gap between homemade footage and hugely expensive television shows.

The move, which would seemingly pre-empt the imminent rise of internet connected TVs that will allow users to access video content sites such as YouTube direct from their living room focal point, will see YouTube attempt to challenge the likes of BBC’s iPlayer as a leader in web TV portals.

With each channel set to bring “several hours of professionally produced original programming a week,” the WSJ report claims “Google is hoping to carve out a niche of original, professionally produced Web videos that it hopes will cultivate loyal viewers.”

They add that “people familiar with the matter” have confirmed that Google “is planning to spend as much as $100 million to commission low-cost content designed exclusively for the Web.”

Previous reports had suggested that the $100 million Google has earmarked for the YouTube revamp would be spent on commissioning 20 celebrities and well known faces such as Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga to produce original content for their own unique channels.

Will YouTube rise with internet connect TV sets to become a leading factor of original web-based content? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

With official word coming from Samsung’s Finnish website, the nation responsible for Nokia and Angry Birds has revealed that local Galaxy S touting smartphone users will finally receive the 2.3 OS overhaul around the middle of the month.

Confirming Samsung’s word, mobile network provider Three has revealed that its UK Galaxy S users will be privy to the Android update “in a couple of weeks.”

Having been posed the question “Any word on when the android 2.3 update is going to be out for the Galaxy S?” Three UK’s official Twitter feed, @ThreeUK, responded: “It's expected in the next couple of weeks but we cannot confirm a date.”

The Galaxy S launched last July to much acclaim, instating Samsung as a true force in the smartphone market, with the 1GHz, 4-inch Super AMOLED display touting device shifting more than 10 million units by the end of the year. Back in February Samsung officially unveiled the follow up to the Galaxy S, the Samsung Galaxy S II, a dual-core smartphone that is expected to land later this month or in early May.

Are you a Samsung Galaxy S user, have you been eagerly awaiting the Android 2.3 update ever since you were given FroYo? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPad may have delayed BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 03:06 AM PDT

Sources say Apple's demands made life hard for RIM.

The BlackBerry PlayBook has taken an eternity to hit shelves, and isn’t even released in the US until next week. But it seems there’s more to the delays than RIM holding the slate back. Word is that Apple’s touchscreen demands helped push back the PlayBook by at least a month.

Insiders at touchscreen suppliers say Apple asked for so many panels for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch that it had caused a shortage, with RIM bring hit directly by the lack of materials.

The BlackBerry PlayBook was first shown off in September last year, and although widely heralded at the time, is now likely to face a major fight for recognition as the iPad 2 conquers all before it.

Motorola Xoom price cuts continue as 3G unit hits £580

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 02:48 AM PDT

Xoom price cuts continue as concern around poor sales grows

Mobile retailer Carphone Warehouse has announced it is to drop the price of the Wi-Fi + 3G Motorola Xoom just days before the Android tablet officially launches in the UK.

Following reports that the Xoom has sold just 100,000 units in the US since its February launch compared to the estimated 2.6 million iPad 2 tablets shifted in the few weeks since its arrival, Carphone Warehouse has followed the likes of PC World in dropping the price of the Android 3.0 touting device.

- See where the Motorola Xoom placed in the T3 Hot 100

Having cut the Xoom’s price tag, Motorola’s first foray into the tablet market will now touch down on UK soil with the 32GB Wi-Fi + 3G model priced £579.99. Originally believed to be hitting the UK in the first week of April, Carphone Warehouse’s new release states the device will now “launch in-store in mid-April,” suggesting possible delays.

Attempting to further sweeten this cut priced deal and tempt consumers away from the iPad 2 and towards the Xoom, the Carphone Warehouse will throw in a Xoom dock, worth £35, free of charge for anyone taking up the offer.

Those wannabe Xoom owners looking to pick the Honeycomb tablet up as part of subsidised tariff deal will be able to get the same specced device for just £199.99 through Talkmobile as part of a two year £25 per month contract that includes unlimited internet access.

Can the Xoom challenge the iPad 2 atop the tablet charts or is it doomed to failure? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony NGP not delayed says exec

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 02:11 AM PDT

Sony NGP will be released by end of year.

The Sony NGP has not been hit delays in the wake of last month’s devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. That’s according to Sony Japan’s Satoshi Fukuoka, who was refuting claims made by Sony’s US gaming boss, Jack Tretton, that the console’s release would need to be staggered because of the natural disaster.

Fukuoka said, “So far we see no impact from the quake on our launch plan.” Tretton had commented in an interview with Bloomberg that the NGP could be held back owing to production problems.

“[The earthquake] may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year’,” said Tretton. That said, Sony has said from the off that the so-called PSP2 would only be released “in at least one territory” in 2011, suggesting a staggered release could still happen.

Whatever happens, Sony faces a race to ensure the NGP is out by Christmas and ready to take on the Nintendo 3DS. Can it see off its Ninty rival? tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple iPad 2: 2.6 million sold already?

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 11:45 PM PDT

Suppliers struggling to keep up as demand for iPad 2 continues.

Apple took delivery of between 2.4 and 2.6 million iPad 2s in March, according to sources at the Cupertino company’s Far East suppliers. With supplies drying up across the globe throughout last month, it’s safe to say that Apple actually sold most of those to iPad 2-hungry punters.

There’s been a shortage of iPad 2s available ever since the tablet launched. Currently the UK Apple store has a two to three week wait for all versions of the slate. Today’s figures suggest that it’s demand, not lack of supply, that’s meant the wait for the iPad 2 has been so long for some consumers.

What’s more, the same source at Apple’s suppliers claims that Jobs and co will be getting in excess of 4 million iPad 2s in April, as the company looks to satisfy demand and ramp up sales.

Apple is yet to reveal official sales figures for the iPad 2. But with the Motorola Xoom said to be struggling to break the 100,000 mark, it’s clear that the new Apple slate is the best-selling tablet out there. Motorola Xoom: only 100,000 sold

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 11:31 PM PDT

Numbers come from Deutsche Bank analysis of recent Android usage figures.

The Motorola Xoom has sold a paltry 100,000 units since its US launch at the end of February. That’s according to Deutsche Bank, which garnered the figures following close analysis of Google’s most recent Android usage stats.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Motorola XOOM video

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

- See where the Motorola Xoom placed in the T3 Hot 100

Android developers’ figures suggested earlier this month that just 0.2 per cent of Android owners were using Honeycomb. Deutsche says this equates to a measly 100,000 people, with the Xoom currently the only device available that runs the tablet-centric version of Google’s OS.

Apple shifted 300,000 iPads on its first weekend last year. Official iPad 2 figures have not yet been released, but are expected to easily break the original slate’s record stats, with some suggesting it’s already well above a million sales.

The news shows just what a massive mountain Google’s tablets are going to have to climb in order to battle it out with the iPad at the top. Have you bought a Motorola Xoom? Let us know how it’s working out for you on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
