News@8pm: Xoom UK sales begin and new COD DLC leaks

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

3DS health issues have caused quite a stir with the global media as users reports bouts of dizziness, eye strain and nausea. Hitting back today Nintendo and 3DS retailers have denied such claims whilst a doctor has said they are wildly over exaggerated.

Apple's iPhone news has seen a couple of steep down slopes today. Following news that Apple has launched the iAd Gallery app, an app that displays nothing but previous iAds, it emerged that the repeatedly delayed white iPhone 4 has been removed from the Apple website suggesting the device has been scrapped.

Motorola's Xoom tablet is reportedly facing poor sales in the US alongside the Atrix, according to an industry analyst that is. Elsewhere on the Xoom front and the Android 3.0 tablet has unofficially gone on sale in the UK with Simply Electronics offering the device for £490, £10 more than a spec similar iPad 2.

Random tech news sees two giants, Apple and Call of Duty, making headlines. Whilst a June arrival of the iPhone 5 is now in doubt following yesterday's claims that it would be landing early summer, the second Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC has leaked. Entitled Escalation the DLC will bring five new maps to Xbox Live first on May 3rd.

White iPhone 4 officially removed from Apple's website

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 08:41 AM PDT

Has Apple's white iPhone 4 finally been canned?

Continuing the seemingly endless tale of when the white iPhone 4 will finally appear Apple has removed all trace of the device from its website all but confirming the device will never make it to retail.

Originally planed to launch alongside its black-hued counterpart back in June 2010, the repeatedly delayed and issue hit device now appears to have given its final farewell as Apple subtly removes all sign of the lighter-toned handset.

Despite the last official word from Apple on the white iPhone 4 being a Steve Jobs announcement stating the device would be made available this spring, with the imminent arrival of the handset’s replacement, the much mooted iPhone 5 expected to launch in June with a dual-core processor, there no longer seems time for the white phone to warrant a global launch.

Having appeared to have now mastered the white iDevice issues with the release of the white iPad 2 Apple will be looking to put memories of its most famous failure of recent years behind it with a white iPhone 5 model more than likely to make a spotless and timely appearance come launch later this year.

Will the white iPhone 4 ever appear or has it been pushed firmly to the back of the ‘lets forget about this’ pile? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Facebook iPhone app adds unfriending, event check-ins

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 07:58 AM PDT

If someone gets so annoying you can't wait to get back to your laptop, you can now instantly unfriend them using your iPhone...

Facebook has added a few new tools to its iPhone app with the ability to unfriend people and use Places to check-in from ongoing events.

Version 3.4 of the app is available to update from the App Store now and also showcases an improved news feed and an improved notifications service.

But the bigger news here is that Facebook users will be able to check-in to events they've RSVP'd to using Facebook Events. So if you've been invited to "John's 30th Birthday party," you can appear from that event rather than just the venue it's being held at.

Also in the iPhone iteration of Places, you can view your friends check-ins using Google Maps.

As we mentioned in the headline, Facebook has also added the opportunity to unfriend users, which a piece of functionality users have been demanding for some time.

There's no news on any of this functionality coming to the Android app as of yet.

Nintendo 3DS health issues rebuked by doctor

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 07:54 AM PDT

Tabloid claims put to rest in 3DS health case

A Cambridge University doctor has lashed out at sensationalist claims in tabloid newspapers suggesting the recently released Nintendo 3DS is damaging to user’s health.

Following the recent spate of articles surrounding the 3DS and gamers suffering from eye strain, nausea and dizziness brought on by playing the glasses-free 3D console, Dr. Neil A Dodgson has claimed such reports are being blown widely out of proportion.

Speaking with gaming website CVG, Dr Dodgson, a graphics and imaging specialist, hit back at tabloid reports that the Nintendo 3DS is "the most returned games console ever" with thousands of users reporting the heavily publicised health concerns stating: "All current commercial 3D technologies (3DS, 3DTV, 3D movies) require a disconnect between accommodation and vergence,"

Explaining the science behind the way we view the footage from Ninty’s latest device Dodgson said: "There are two sets of muscles in the eyes, one of which focuses the eyes on the thing you are looking at (accommodation), the other of which converges the eyes at the position you are looking (vergence). In the real world, the two sets of muscles work together. With the commercial 3D technologies, you need to focus on the screen but converge on the virtual objects - which means that the two sets of muscles are no longer working together.”

Speaking on the reported cases of eye strain and dizziness he added: "Unfortunately, there are some people who are very sensitive to the situation where those two muscle systems are not working together. The effect, for them, will be a feeling of sore eyes or a headache, which will cause no permanent damage but will mean that they cannot use the 3D device."

Motorola Xoom released early as UK sales begin priced £490

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Simply Electronics go early on Xoom launch

The Motorola Xoom is now available to buy in the UK with online retailer Simply Electronics offering the Android 3.0 tablet for under £490.

The 10.1-inch dual-core processor touting tablet which was officially unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier in the year was set to be released in the UK during the first week of April but an official date or confirmation of launch has yet to be given by manufacturer Motorola.

Despite the Xoom not yet officially available direct from its manufacturer the first device to come equipped with Google tablet-centric Android 3.0 OS, Honeycomb, is available to the British public with Simply Electronics claiming they currently have seven of the 32GB Wi-Fi only devices available to by for £489.95 with a 1-2 business day wait for delivery.

Yesterday PC World dropped the pre-order price of the Xoom to just £479 .99 in an attempt to combat the phenomenal sales seen by the Apple iPad 2 since the dual camera, dula-core processor slimmed down tablet hit UK stores late last month.

Can the Xoom be the first Android tablet to truly challenge Apple’s dominant iPad in the tablet market? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Call of Duty: Black Ops new DLC leaks ahead of launch

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:17 AM PDT

Xbox to beat PS3 and PC to Black Ops Escalation DLC

The second downloadable content pack for the most successful game launch of all time, Call of Duty: Black Ops, has been leaked ahead of its May arrival.

Dubbed ‘Escalation’ the DLC has appeared early thanks to leaked promo material by GAME Australia outing the upcoming release that is set to bring five new map packs to the war based first person shooter that broke all launch records when it hit consoles late last year.

Set to hit Xbox Live on May 3rd, with PS3 and PC packs to follow at a later date, no doubt much to the annoyance of PS3 gamers who have repeatedly complained about an inferior Black Ops offering, the Escalation DLC will feature missions entitled ‘Seize the Zoo’, ‘Take the Hotel’, ‘Secure the Convoy’, ‘Raid the Stockpile’ and ‘Survive Call of the Dead’.

Following on from the opening Black Ops content pack, First Strike that launched on February 1st the second Black Ops DLC will land within days of the official announcement of the next addition to the Call of Duty franchise, believed to be Modern Warfare 3 that is to launch later this year.

Is Black Ops the greatest instalment of the COD franchise or is the best still yet to come? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google cloud music app leaks out on the web

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:05 AM PDT

Images of Android Music 3.0 snapped

Google's much-rumoured cloud music app has been outed after a developer version of the Android Market was leaked.

The guys at Tech From 10 managed to get a look at Android Music 3.0 which is tipped to see Google launch its own cloud-music service to rival the Amazon Cloud player and a similar service touted for iTunes.

Tech From 10 confirmed that the Google Music cloud service was in place, but when trying to access an account to use it, were unable to try it out.

It seems appearance-wise the new Google Music app will follow closely to the version optimized for Honeycomb tablet devices like the Motorola XOOM. One image grabbed (which you can see here) shows off the "Recent" section with accompanying album previews.

The 'Test' Market has since been removed by Google from the device it appeared on, but other notable observations from the Android Market leak include a possible new camera and Google Desk Clock apps.

Apple launch iAd Gallery app made entirely of adverts

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 03:12 AM PDT

Apple launch iAd Gallery despite previously declining Ad based apps

Apple has officially launched an app that allows users to browse the variety of advertisements running through the company’s iAds system without the pesky distraction of further content.

Entitled iAd Gallery, Apple’s latest app release offers iOS users no further functionality than to browse iAd advertisements despite having previously rejected the Ads Tubs app, a third party iPhone application which offered similar ad-only content and was deemed by the Cupertino tech giant as offering “not enough user functionality.”

Whilst iAds reportedly have a higher than average click through rate, an entire application dedicated to nothing other than interactive advertisements seems a stretch too far, even for Apple, a company that has repeatedly surprised markets with user uptake of a variety of products and services.

Available now in the US app store Apple’s official product describtion describes the iAD Gallery as “A celebration of advertising, featuring iAd campaigns from some of the world’s best brands and their advertising agencies.”

It goes on to add: “ The iAd Gallery gives you easy access to a selection of the fun and informative ads that have run in some of your favorite apps. Use the Browse feature to discover ads you haven’t seen, or to find those you want to see again. Even lets you tag your favorites to a Loved section that’s all your own.”

Is Apple taking user expectations too far with the iAd Gallery app? Let us know what you think of the ad heavy app via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple patents new connector with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 02:57 AM PDT

And it might be smaller... get saving for a new iPod dock

Apple has filed a patent for a new form of iPod, iPad and iPhone dock connector that, if became a reality, would replace the 30-pin connector port that’s been used ever since the iDevice’s conception.

The new port, as detailed in the recent patent’s diagram, called a "Reduced Size Multi-Pin Male Plug Connector” would add USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt compatibility to the iPad, iPhone and iPod range, which would dramatically speed up the data transfer time between them and your computer. The result of this would be the end of that huge wait every time the iDevices back-up data to an iTunes account after updates.

The ‘reduced’ in that title has us wondering, though; will the new port and connector be smaller in size than the current breed? If so, it’ll mean that there’ll be an incompatibility issue for old docks and new iMachines, and vice-versa. If that’s the case, that BeoSound Dock you just shelled out for may soon be rendered obsolete.

What do you make of this design? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Nintendo 3DS health scare stories debunked

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 02:16 AM PDT

The Sun had claimed that HMV was offering full refunds to affected gamers.

Nintendo and some of the UK’s biggest games retailers have moved to refute claims made in yesterday’s Sun newspaper that the handheld console was at the centre of a health scare. The paper said “thousands” of gamers had suffered from dizziness and headaches owing to the 3D effects and that the console was suffering from “record return levels”.

Nintendo said, “Recent reports are incorrect. The number of calls and emails with queries on Nintendo 3DS is in fact well below the rate experienced during past hardware launches and having spoken with our retail partners there are only a handful of people who have actually gone into stores to request a refund."

Nintendo added that regular breaks while using the device were advised and that the 3D effect should be turned down if gamers did feel any discomfort.

GAME said it had had fewer than five complaints, while HMV said The Sun’s claim that “thousands” were afflicted might have come from the fact that gamers can trade in any hardware at their stores, the 3DS included, for any other gaming product.

The Sun also featured one user who complained he couldn’t get his money back after feeling ill. Under trading laws, full refunds are only available for faulty goods, not those that make you sick, said HMV

HP webOS touchscreen-only phone spied

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 01:10 AM PDT

No final specs or details, but is this the webOS phone we've been waiting for?

HP’s Pre 3 caused a ripple of excitement when it was first touted back in February. But essentially it looked the same as the old school Palm Pre, with a slide-out keyboard and touchscreen up top.

But a new spy shot, seen here and snagged by the chaps at PreCentral, shows HP is working a keyboard-free webOS phone. It would certainly make sense, seeing as the operating system is finger-friendly and the Pre 3’s keyboard can feel awkward and cramped.

Sadly, there’s no news on what exactly this new webOS phone has going on under the hood. PreCentral reckons the screen will be 480x800, but other than that, details remain sketchy.

The Pre 3 isn’t due out until summer, so chances are that this unannounced cell won’t be making its way to shelves for some time. Is it worth holding out for? Tell us what you think now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone 5 June release refuted

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 11:51 PM PDT

iPhone 5 release rumours continue to rumble on.

Looking for your daily dose of iPhone 5 release gossip? Then you’re in the right place. Following claims by a Korean news source yesterday that Apple would be releasing the iPhone 5 at the end of June, a new rumour suggests that’s actually bunkum.

“Sources” speaking to Loop Insight have said that the gossip about a June release is simply not true. This tallies with a number of recent reports which have suggested Apple will focus on software at its June WWDC gathering, leaving the iPhone 5’s release until September.

The iPhone 5 is expected to come with a larger screen, as well as NFC tech. Other outlandish rumours include an iPhone laptop dock and a pared down nano version of the bestselling blower.

Motorola Xoom and Atrix struggling says analyst

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 11:36 PM PDT

Poor sales suggest Moto has a long way to go before catching iPad and iPhone.

The Motorola Xoom and Motorola Atrix are both killer pieces of next-gen Android kit. But that doesn’t appear to have helped them fly off the shelves, with one analyst claiming that sales of both devices are “disappointing”.

James Faucette, from analysts Pacific Crest, says that his own checks have shown that, “…sell through trends,” for both the Atrix and Xoom are sluggish. The Xoom went on sale in the US at the end of February and is due out here in Blighty this week.

Word is that the Atrix is struggling to match old-school phones like the iPhone 3GS, which can be bought at the same price across the pond. The Xoom’s failure to include Adobe Flash from the start, supposedly one of its key features, clearly hasn’t helped either.

Are you planning on buying a Xoom? Let us know what you think of this story on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
